The problem is that LCS was lauded as do-everything ship and they didn't see the disaster coming.
Nobody denies the fact that US Navy is the most powerful navy in the world, you still have Battleships ready-for-modernisation just in case you'd do large amphibious assaults in the future, this is already something no other navy can afford.
The thing boils down to the fact that 3 new ship classes you've made don't seem to do that great - Zumwalt ended up being testbed, LCS is all around failure and it seems that it will be turned into several sub-classes of specialised vessels instead of being modular and Ford class carriers are delayed again and again.

And in combat, you want a large enough crew that you can do good damage control, fight fires, apply elbow grease to whatever piece of shit that stopped working and so on immediately.
Tanks are similar, and there's a reasons why the US sticks with 4 man tank crews. It gives them four men to work on one tank. The new Russian Armata platform could easily do a T-14 with two men, but they stick with three. Again, to do maintenance.
