"Mediterranean identity" is a product of the race science fad of the 19th-20th century. It doesn't exist in day-to-day life outside of Sup Forums and even more obscure and autistic phrenological fora. The first unifying factor was Rome, which wasn't exclusive to the Mediterranean and which was ultimately replaced by the Catholic Church. It's not culture, it's not language, and it's not race or ethnicity.

Most genetic traits show up widely across many different gene pools. If you took someones dna in aggregate, you could make a pretty good prediction as to where they were from, even if each of their chromosomes show up in many places in similar frequencies.

Ye exactly. Like, European Y chromosomes dominate latin and south american gene pools. Meanwhile, all the mitochronial dna of south and latin americans are from the original south americans.
Its weird talking about groups of people going extinct, because, its their genes that replicate. Within one population certain genes can go extinct while others prosper. In the South America example above, the South American Y chromosomes went extinct, independently of the other South American genes.
