Why do burgers dislike higher taxes? Lost of West EU countries with relative (but sometimes the same as certain states in the US) taxes.

My parents were never rich, they both got ill for working in the factories back then during the economic boom.
They could only work 40-70% (government doctor concluded this)
Soo, there wasnt a lot of money when growing up. But i still had my chances.

They got their rent subsidized
My parents couldnt afford for me to go to football training. But because they earn less than xx.xx they only had to pay 10% and every year i could get 150 euros worth of sportsclothing from the government.

Because they earn less than xx.xx i got a computer + internet for 3 years + printer when i was 12 (highschool age). I got it again when i turned 15 and 17.

Then i became a real student.

Full health insurance is €101, but because im a student and earn less than xx.xx i get €78 subsidized.
My uni is max 2k a year (government rules) but i get €550 a month subsidized to study and a free transport card. I don't have to pay it back, its all waived away when i graduate. If i want, i can borrow extra money for 0% interest rate and pay it back in 30 years.

Because i earn less than xx.xx my rent (which is €670) is subsidized. I get €377 a month.

Now for example if i would earn 10k more a year, i would only get €220 a month subsidized.
The more i earn, the more the subsidizations diminish. Subsidizations end somewhere around 45-60k a year.

So even when i graduate, i still get some, but not all, things subsidized untill i get fully paid and can handle my own shit. I now earn around 25K with my parttime jobs, i still am studying.

Now lets look back at this. What if the government didnt help me? How would i end up now? If i were in the US i couldnt afford uni, or a place of my own. Whats left, crime? Endless life of living in poverty?
My parents sure would be living in poverty.

I am 26 now, the government has helped me all the way untill now. All this cost a lot of money, do i mind paying some more taxes now? No not really.. others did that as well.
To me, the only downside of this is filling in a lot of papers to keep proving you (or whoever is asking subsidizations) is not leeching off for free (like the government doctor actually confirming you are not able to work 100%).

They are ROUGHLY analogous, yes, although because the EU is less confederated than the US is, national taxes are much more important for you guys. For instance, US state income taxes don't directly fund national security or anything related to foreign policy. Not to mention, some states (like mine, WAfriend here) do not tax income at all.

I am a farmer, I live in the middle of nowhere. I don't pay for water, as it's on a private well. I don't pay for electricity, as I've solar panels and a wind mill(Smaller one). I don't use much electric so it works out. I heat my home with a wood stove. I don't have air conditioning. I have single pane windows and a slate roof. This house was built by my ancestors.

I have a 15 acre vegetable garden, and I have 20 acres of pasture for cattle. Plan on getting hogs next year.

My nearest neighbor is 3 miles away. I don't have kids. I went to private school.

Why should I pay taxes, OP? Because of property tax I have to work a job in the city. Which is 30 miles away. I then have to buy insurance for my vehicle, have to register it, have to do all kinds of extra shit that I otherwise wouldn't have to do - all so I can afford to pay bullshit property tax.

So i should bust my ass for 4-6 years in school, studying 10hrs+ days just so I can do a job that's:
1) "more interesting"
2) a lot more harder/stressful than an average job

Education is an investment.

The money government spends on education leads to higher wages and thus higher tax earnings for the government.

In return, people with a degree shouldn't complain too much about the taxes they have to pay, they are basically paying back the cost of their education over their working life.
In America former students have to pay a lot more to pay back those gigantic student loans.

Unfortunately my government now wants to put students in huge debt as well.

In the US we have a tradition of handling our own shit. Extended families, kind neighbors, and local leaders all worked together to maker certain that nobody fell too behind. In America you would have had a grandparent who bought you your computer because you needed one. A neighbor who was better off might have guided you through the process of going to university. The last few decades though we've been seeing rules and regulations the disincentivise these relationships. We're getting left up shit creek without a paddle.

Our culture is so different from Europe's that the European way of handling things (which seems to work fine in Europe) won't work here. We're so suspicious of government power that the idea of giving them 70% of our income feels wrong. Hell there are people here who believe a federal income tax is unconstitutional.
