Most people are insecure about their intelligence. They like it when they can feel intellectually superior to someone. The writes for late night shows, news, sketch shows, etc. figured this out long ago and have been using it to make audiences feel good and thus tune in for decades. Trump is an easy target. He looks strange relative to most celebrities, he says stupid things or things that can be taken out of context to sound stupid very often, and he's rich. This makes him a good punching bag for the general population. There's plenty of material to use against him, and no one feels guilty making fun of him, because they feel like they're punching up at the rich rather than down at someone struggling. These shows need to get people to tune in so guests will want to come on to promote their material and advertisers will want to pay for commercial spots. The financial success of the show relies on getting people to tune in, not to create art or communicate truth to the public. As long as the same formula keeps working, we'll keep getting the same stale shit on these shows.
