He relied too much on tropes and meme words. but if you read his letters you can see he is actually an intelligent writer in his natural prose. lovecraft goes through the motions, all his stories have the same shell, it's like reading Nora roberts or someshit, but there is atleast substance underneath it all.

I think all you need to know about Lovecraft, Howard, and most of the other authors from that era is that authors like Steven King fucking hate them. Loathe them.
Why? Because they represent something that is simply anathema to them. I'm not even sure what that is. Pure originality? Daring adventure, the ability to transport you to new places with every story and tell you tales you absolutely love hearing? I'm not even sure.

I've read "The Isle of the Torturers" in a Weird Tales collection I picked up, that story was pretty good. A lot of the stuff wasn't that great. Another one I thought was cool was "The Chain". Different author though.
