It was pretty mediogre. A lot of the jokes were just referencing pop culture at the time, like the bullet time sequence. They aren't funny anymore.

I had to look up the Hero's Journey ... and it's literally the opposite of the opposite of that.

They're pretty funny and inventive for kids movies. Shrek 1 was supposed to be a parody of typical Disney fairy tales, so I kinda disagree with your assessment there. I think it's really creative.
