no, smith's whole line of reasoning is bullshit. overpopulation is what happens when any species doesn't have a natural predator to adequately thin their numbers. for example, reindeer on st. matthew island in alaska had no natural predators which lead to them overpopulating then they all died out when they ran out of food.
