As for "curing" it I would compare it to obesity. It's not really clear when it started and what caused it. It's a habit you develop over years and years. You can change, but it takes a lot of effort, and most importantly the will to change. And it's not a quick fix. You have to work constantly towards the goal for a long tome and even if you reach it, you probably are still more at risk to return to the destructive behaviour you were engaging in.
