It's what it sounds like. Zero guaranteed hours. They just call you in when they want you to work. McDonald's in Britain has like 90% of its workers on these.
Well, I tutor for $25/h but only 3 times a week which doesn't pay much. Also 6 classes, only Sundays (((off))).

We now live in a world where people live so long their children are already in their 50/60`s or later before parents die and the inheritance is passed down.
Earlier generations did not have this problem. Money was passed down earlier in their life and they could use it for their own children.
The older generations have to realise that all that money they hoard to pass on when there dead is wasted. Start spending now, give to your children and grandchildren now. Let them use it for their educations and setting up a life.

A 16 hour contract means I am definitely going to work at least 16 hours a week and anything else is over time
A zero hour contract could still potentially be 40+ hours a week if they are available but the employer has no obligation to give you any hours and you don't have holiday days or sick days

I like them. It means I can say no to work when I feel like it. Most of my jobs since 2008 have been zero hour and the flexibility is wonderful.

My excuse is that I don't care about society, society doesn't care about me and that's just fine by me. I absolutely do now want to contribute, out of principle.
Your life is a bit different. You are working. It is hard to look after someone and not having to worry about money helps with that. Everyone in your position should be helped through a difficult time.
Make sure you get at least one day a week as personal time.
