The post says NY to LA, not LA to NY like the article says.
Ignoring that: The article also says it'll happen in 2017, so it has to take place on January 1st for that post to be right. But, in that case, since it takes ~39 hours to drive from LA to NY, it'll already be ~7pm or 4 hours past the roleplayer's intended arrival time.
Going back to the wrong way around: If it takes that long to get from LA to NY, the announced trip, it'll then be around the 4th that it arrives back in LA assuming it drives immediately back. So, if you're taking that article as proof that one of these things has happened, it's outside of the scope of the events outlined by the roleplayer
