While it parallels with judeochristianity in an obvious way the plot device was clearly centered around authoritarian religious extremism, not simply Christianity.
Regardless it is still kinda fedora tippy. Its not like old dude is evil, he's a genuine and thoughtful person who wants to do good, he was just corrupted by the methodology surrounding physical side of power that he was around his whole life. He had a chance to seize that power himself with the faith militant and took it, ultimately making him a tragic character for starting a path against on his own ideals ultimately leading to his death. His arch was actually one of the better ones of the show.
