I remember st. Thomas (san Tomas de agustino) wrote a text critizicing church, saying that science, philosophy and religion are complementary and should not overstep their boundaries. An example would be that heaven is up in the clouds and once we got to space that notion was dispelled.

Christianity is less about the truth of claims (e.g. Christ existed, virgin birth etc). Christianity is about the aspirations for humans to be christ like, to transcend the primitive, brutal existence in jewish and roman society and reach a state of good, heaven like life. This should be achieved by having empowered individuals who are moral actors and can think ahead of their immediate action. All in all, christianity challenges the believer to improve him/herself and find the balance between their own and societeis desire. The power of religion is the unification of civilisations. If I had to point to one dialogue, I favour Phaedo. The most beautiful part is when Socrates talks about his looking for the first cause of things and discovering Anaxagoras who said that the first principle is Mind. I prefer the Benjamin Jowett translations you can find for free online, because they are written in a Victorian English that preserves some of the poetry and beauty of Plato's original Greek.
