they do it for low budget reasons.

trust producers / directors don't really want the aliens to look like that.

pro-tip: don't make a sci-fi tv series in the first place

it's "body horror"

Not just that, but also a total lack of creativity and an obsessive need that everyone must have human emotions.

Is there honestly any film or show where there are aliens who have actual character roles but are nothing like humans?

>aliens that don't resemble humans

Arrival's aliens weren't human at all.

But the issue sci-fi has with Aliens is that the less humane the aliens appear, the more you have to explain them. So that's best only for pure hard sci-fi.

If aliens aren't the core of the film / tv, it's probably better they resemble humans.

>completely alien
>having a character role that humans (the audience) can empathize with

Choose wisely

I can empathise with animals in nature documentaries so why not?

I once read a book where half of it was from the perspective of aliens, who were nothing like humans, it was very good and interesting. They of course had the basic set of human emotions, anger, happy, sad, but in appearance and lifestyle and beliefs they were very unhuman. And it was fine.

Nigger that's not even comparable to something completely alien. A lot of animals (mammals especially) are essentially brainlet humans in shittier bodies. They need food, try to stay warm during winter, try to protect their chilluns from mutually recognizable threats, and adapt to environments that humans know very well. Even faggots like Dolphins and honorary Aryans like Orcas can reach a common accord with humans despite not being able to communicate, and often help is out to further mutual interests since we have motivations that are understandable to one another in circumstances and environments we're both familiar with.

There's nothing wrong with this in science fantasy, there's a reason in standard fantasy all the major races tend to be humanoid

Also known as the Star Trek makeup trick.
