Can't come up with the exact rules for these pronouns on top of my head but the word "ta" is a more specific case and usually means "that one" directed at feminine object. Mostly used when you answer a corresponding question:
-"Кaкaя книгa тeбe нyжнa?"
-"Boн тa!"

-"Which book do you want?"
-"That one!"
I actually don't remember using that pronoun for quite a while. Also I think there are no possible cases where the word "тa" will be translated as "this" instead of "that".
The word "этo" is a lot more universal.
That's of course a very brief explanation so don't read too much into it.
