In a sense I get why they picked Rey to be played by an average looking girl as they probably assumed it is easier for girls to self insert better as someone average rather than beautiful (e.g. Portman). Though my theory is that they put all these algo-saxon women (Clarke, Ridley, Felicity) in the nu-wars for the sole reason of Kathleen Kennedy self inserting herself in these stories. Making nu-wars the greatest example of fan-fiction in modern history, even bigger than 50 shades of grey or twilight.

Of that I'm not entirely certain myself. Well most nerds and boys would love to be dashing rogues like Han Solo, and probably wanting to be like someone makes them more relatable. Little girls love princesses because they would love to be princesses too, it's like boys wanting to be knights. The assumption by Kennedy was probably that the older generation of women would not find Rey relatable if she was a bombshell. I know that the "feminist agenda" thing is overplayed but my guess would be that she was made like she was for the sole reason of pandering to a specific niche of women that Kennedy herself is a part of. So they made Rey an average looking macho female (being able to overpower even the strongest males, as if she was straight out of Rambo 3), which I presume caters to the 21st centuries female power fantasy. Considering that almost every male in TLJ is a bumbling incompetent idiot too, that contrasts even more how great Rey is and how petty men are.
