Yes, Anno wrote a public letter of apology for delaying it for so long, due to working on Shin Godzilla.
It's supposed to be his current ongoing project.

I liked the original series, are the Rebuilds worth watching? Is Mari a prominent character? She disgusts me.

Rebuild 1 is a nice reimagining of the first 6 episodes of EVA

The first one is a capeshit remake of the first 6 episodes, really well done Ramiel fight at the end, the second one squeezes a large part of the series into one movie, makes Shinji "less annoying", but it kinda turns against him at the end, the third one is new material (but not very good or original), Mari's pretty damn prominent in the second one, not that much in the third one.

Music from Sagisu is ace in all three of them, especially in the third one where they drop almost all call backs to the show's score.

They're interesting to watch just to see what directions Anno decided to take the franchise in. It's nowhere near as insane as Anima obviously, but there's some cool ideas in there every now and then.

Anno is enjoying his life making 10/10 Godzilla flicks user.

English titles for the rebuild movies differ from the Japanese ones. 3.0+1.0 is just the English title, while the Japanese one is still subtitled ๐„‡

I've meaning to watch this series. I don't really like anime but I have heard a lot of good things so I was thinking of giving it a shot. Is it worth it?

It's been more time from the start of the rebirth movie up till now then it has from EoE till 1.1

Eva timeline is repeating. There is so many references to this is the films its not even subtle. I think this is why they went so apeshit in the 3rd, because they are setting it all up to be recalled back to the first.

The series is honestly pretty slow in till about the 16th episode, then it goes insane till the final 2.

The show is pretty hard and fast about explaining itself, so its best just to take it at face value and enjoy it. It has good visuals, interesting concepts and feels.

It's a really good series but if you don't like anime in general you're probably gonna be annoyed by a lot of things.
If you wanna give it a try, definitely don't stop after the first few episodes though.

Alrighty I guess I'll try it out. I think it first got on my radar because I vaguely recall people comparing some aspect of it to Twin Peaks, which I love. Is that a thing or am I just misremembering that?

Rebuilds are good movies, but they definitely aren't at the level of the original series.
