For a second, it felt like we may have cause to worry about Rian Johnson's proposed Star Wars trilogy, which is set to kick off following the completion of JJ Abrams' Episode IX.
As our own James Emanuel Shapiro laid out in his analysis of The Last Jedi's seemingly manipulated Rotten Tomatoes scores, and Andrew Todd detailed upon discovering a "well-adjusted" fan's re-edit of the picture "for men" (author's note: sheesh), The Last Jedi rubbed a particular brand of Star Wars fan the wrong way.
Though the movie was a financial success, the blowback it received gave everyone - including Johnson, who's gone on record as being shaken by certain negative criticisms - a moment of pause, wondering if Disney and Lucasfilm would put some restrictions on the filmmaker when it came time to craft his next set of adventures in a galaxy far, far away.
Well, according to the writer/director, that's not going to be the case. In a recent interview with Fandango (while appearing at SXSW for the premiere of the BTS doc The Director and the Jedi), Johnson very diplomatically said:
>“I feel like every Star Wars thing that ever gets made has a big, loud response, because Star Wars fans are passionate, and that’s what makes them awesome. I don’t think it’s possible when you’re really telling a story you care about, and having it come from your heart - it’s just not possible to be intellectually processing, like, what everyone else wants, nor would it be a good thing, a healthy thing. I don’t think that’s a good way to tell a story.”
First off, let's just take a breather to pat Johnson on the back. The guy's received a lot of flak from the very same fans he just championed, and the fact that he's able to look them in the (digital) eyes and say "hey man, I still love you all" is such a heartwarming thing. This dude's just incredibly warm and endearing. Secondly, Johnson's got a point about the creative process. He's got to be able to make his movie, his way, and listen to his artistic instinct when sitting in that giant director's chair. Otherwise, the pictures are just not going to be his, and nobody (well, nobody who enjoys idiosyncratic, fascinating tentpole cinema, that is) wants that.
Check out the full video of the interview below, and get ready to revisit The Last Jedi when it hits Blu-ray Tuesday. Lord knows I can't wait.
Disney is burning Rian down. He's taking all the heat while it should be the execs who green lit this turd. Some head should be rolling at the top, nit just Rian. You have Kathleen Kennedy of course, then Alan Horn who helms all the Disney movies department and Bob Iger who greenlit Han Solo's death in TFA and Luke in TLJ.
Jayden Robinson
Everyone always feels bad for Mark but nobody feels bad for Rian. The poor man has done nothing but suffer.
Bmd is home to some of the most shallow, pedantic types of "movie fans" I have ever seen. It's a place where politics and the "correct" intentions are far more important than thr excecuation of beautiful art. These shitholes are the prime example of a pseudointellectual, who will without pause, spend hours talking about the unique genre trappings and political messaging of the most recent Marvel movie as if it is actual importabt and is actually saying something.
Fucking fools. As if anything other than topicality and ironic detachement was ever NOT the goal for Marvel Studios.
BMD poisons film criticism and it's very existence is an attack on film as art. These film fans clamor and shout from the highest balconies to slread word of ghe latest soulless corporate paste, over-marketed and tested to ensure every possible demographic is considered and serviced. Do not become these people tv. I beg you.
Rian is only half to blame. The directing in the movie was fine, it was the writing that sucked dick. A company like disney should not have allowed a script like that across their desk with approval. It's just as much the execs fault.
Alexander Cook
I love how Rian has Mark on a leash parading him around like the walking corpse that he has become
Nicholas Mitchell
Arent you the same guy who complains the MCU is all the same shit that stifles any kind of creative vision?
1. Sequel Trilogy 2. Star Wars Story Trilogy 3. Rian Johnson Trilogy 4. Game of Thrones Trilogy 5. Jon Favreau TV series 6. Some other TV series?
Man.
Landon Flores
proof that disney doesn't care about the money star wars can yield but rather about how much further it can vehicle their PC agendas.
Hudson Jones
In other words, Disney Star Wars is unkillable.
Hope you boys are ready.
Cameron Roberts
>seemingly manipulated Rotten Tomatoes scores, are they ever going to stop with this meme
Samuel Miller
I just want to know why his parents named him Rian instead of Ryan. Then if nothing else he could share his name with based dudes like Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, and Ryan Coogler.
Blake Bailey
>not possible to be intellectually processing You can say that again
This trilogy is a fucking farce. It will never happen, and is just Disney trying to create the impression of "soldiering on" to buoy stock price and investor nervousness.
Disney (and its ever-present Sup Forums shills) wants to sell the notion that they're an insurmountable entertainment monolith, but they're in a really vulnerable position at present...they took their eye off the ball on the SW series, and this fuck-up took place, and later this year, Avengers: Infinity War will close out the MCU as fans have known it, with most of the original cast now up for contract renewal, which Disney will likely botch in the same way they botched SW by not maintaining Abrams at the helm for the entire trilogy, because of their petty concerns for expenses related to "borrowing" him from Paramount (which also resulted in them trashing his original story arc, lest they incur royalties to him and Paramount).
And on top of all this, there's a tidal shift to streaming entertainment, which they're only slowly taking interest in, and will likely end disastrously for them, as it's nearly impossible in the business world to leap from one format to another with the same level of success...
Why would a company spend billions of dollars acquiring a franchise they intend to destroy the value of? Am I the only one who doesn't see how that makes sense?
Asher Wilson
> it was the writing that sucked dick Is that a subtle joke or are you not aware that he's the main writer a?
Bentley Ortiz
>It will never happen, Just like BP will definitely flop, right? Lmao.
Nicholas Rivera
Disney Lucasfilm didn't have to let him write it.
Nolan Phillips
The scripts was reviewed by Disney, he didn't force it on them. Acoording to Rian's producer, KK and her story group of feminist roasties were super positive about it. Rian is a good boy and wrote a script that would appeal to this cunt, not to SW fans.
Jason Garcia
Thing is, a trilogy can happen but his budget can be different, etc.
Camden Clark
>if you express a negative opinion on something that mean's you're a troll
So? He's still the root of the problem regardless.
>JJ did nothing wrong yeah disney evil and all, but just like above, everyone bears responsibility.
Isaiah White
Plus even if they literally continue at this same "one movie per year" pace and Rian Johnson's trilogy is the very next thing, we won't see it until 2021 at the earliest. More than enough time for Disney to allocate the budget for it.
Brody Hill

Where did I criticize BP, shill? The MCU has been competently (and at times, brilliantly) managed up to this point, but that's all about to change.
>JJ did nothing wrong
We'll never know. TLJ is so botched, even having him return for IX is just contingency planning, and it's hard to see how he can retcon the ruined plot to the point where it's watchable again.
Maybe someday the original arc (confirmed by Daisy Ridley) will surface, and we'll have better insight...
Bane meme coming to life. Why would you throw a man etc.
Gabriel Murphy
BMD is a site run by Alamo Drafthouse, an ever-expanding franchise of incredibly successful high-end specialty movie theaters. They push whatever sells movie tickets, so unwavering over-the-top enthusiasm for everything is the name of the game. They have decent programming and the newer theaters have state of the art sound and digital projection capabilities. I saw a 4k restoration of Blue Velvet last week and it was amazing, other than the fact it was "introduced" by some literal tranny hawking PBR by trying to meme Dennis Hopper's "Heineken? Fuck that shit, Pabst Blue Ribbon" line.
Nah the root of the problem is Kathleen Kennedy, she hired soy yes-men to do the movies she wanted them to do, not a director's creative vision and certainly not what the fans wanted, and I'm not talking fanservice, I'm talking a real Star Wars movie that respects the legacy and moves forward with a new story without trampling the old characters to shoehorn a Mary Sue lead. KK is the problem, but JJ and Rian are still awful spineless directors. If you remove JJ and Rian but leave KK you'll still get crappy movies from other bad directors.
Sebastian Miller
JJ WILL SAVE US AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>Why would a company spend billions of dollars acquiring a franchise they intend to destroy the value of?
Incompetence, hubris, actually believing your own marketing department's press releases, and (worse) your own bots and shill army's astroturf affirmation on the phony world of social media.
>We'll never know. We'll know with ep9 >it's just contingency planning no it was planned way ahead of the backlash, contingency planning would have been to hire a talented director, not the hipster fuck up of the moment. >it's hard to see how he can retcon the ruined plot to the point where it's watchable again He's partially responsible for this ruin, it started with the farce awakens, TLJ is just the final nail in the coffin. >the original arc (confirmed by Daisy Ridley) Damage control, Rian already admitted there was nothing to work on and he had to shit the sequel by himself (as it shows)
Elijah Barnes
SHE HIRED SOYMAN, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH RIAN YOU KILLED MY STAR BORS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FUCK THIS I CRY FOR 4 MONTH NOW AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
JJ's response to having his work raped by another director: >fuck off trolls, you just hate women. Here, have some gay characters
Brayden Moore
So it doesn't matter who Disney are, what matters is their plan?
Logan Jones
What I'm most concerned about was this guy was made director for the new nu-SW trilogy and yet by the point his first SW film wasn't even released yet.
Despite Marvel and their shit, at least they pick directors who actually proved themselves (Winter Soldier directors and writers) to push for their Phase 3 Avenger movies AFTER the financial and critical success of that movie.
So why did this shiteating cunt face get picked for directing the new trilogy?
Easton Reyes
They're a big company.
Nathaniel Barnes
>no it was planned way ahead of the backlash
His return was confirmed days ahead of its release, indicating that the executives finally had the presence of mind to actually watch this disaster and realized they had a storm looming.
Disney clearly knew the movie was botched for some time...watch the TLJ trailers again, and notice how it seems as if they're for an entirely different movie, as if (for instance) the Snoke-is-Plagueis, Rey-is-a-Kenobi, etc. storylines were about to be confirmed.
But it was too late, and reshoot rumors had already hurt Rogue One's take, so they just opted to sell a dog food as Grade A Sirloin.
Cameron White
They said they gave him a nu-trilogy before TLJ to boost the confidence in that film they knew was terrible. If Disney was sincere they would have given him episode 9 when Trevorrow backed off, but they brought back JJ instead which costed them a lot of money because he was tied to Paramount. Now their little plan backfired because the fans are wondering why this guy is having such a privilege and they are pressured to fire him asap which is a PR nightmare now. They pushed forward the dvd release so they can flush rian as quick as possible.
Kayden Kelly
dirty ryan
When you get on top of your axript and shit out a tiny bit to your turd is about halfway out your bumbcrack and you draw on it's pages using your turd as a crayon.

theres no sequel trilogy to the ST, maybe in 10-15 years. Its the end of the Skywalker saga.
Matthew Morris
JJ WILL SAVE US YEAH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I KNOW THAT SNOKE IS PLAGUEIS AND REY IS A SKYWALKER YESSS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>indicating that the executives finally had the presence of mind to actually watch this disaster and realized they had a storm looming. that's the complete opposite, they're doubling down on that bullshit with JJ at the helm.
Kevin Rivera
>If Disney was sincere they would have given him episode 9 when Trevorrow backed off, but they brought back JJ instead which costed them a lot of money because he was tied to Paramount. just use your brain, his new trilogy starts 2020, one year after IX off course they will not give him IX too, he needs time to write the script for 3 movies.
Joseph Cook
If he has to say that, it means they have.

Rian statement: They had nothing planned or anything. I was surprised about that.
Isaiah Lewis
the are 3 trilogies on in production
Sebastian Anderson
Holy shit. Why are Star Wars directors allowed to be antagonistic about people not liking their movies? A comic book movie director would get in trouble for that.
Robert Collins
he said they have nothing planned beyond VIII, witch is a lie, since KK confirmed they have a start and an end for the trilogy. What every director does to get there is up to him.
What would they launch a new trilogy at the moment Colin backed off and they were looking for a director in emergency? Why not hire Rian on the spot if they actually liked his work? Use your brain.
Ian Bell
It's all a joke. It has to be.
Easton Evans
He is talking about the "SCRIPT", the story is done, LF wrote it already.
Isaac Miller
Rian was supposed to direct and both VIII and IX, he couldn't due to the heavy workload.
JJ even had an outline for 8 which Rian saw and threw out.
Gavin Cook
A lie? I doubt it. It's the LOST formula. They don't need no freakin' plan. Why would a director lie like that and get away with it?
Adrian Diaz
>What would they launch a new trilogy at the moment Colin backed off and they were looking for a director in emergency? Why should they fucking cancel a whole trilogy, When you can just use JJ instead of Rian ? delaying roadmaps is too expensive (poison for shareholder)
What she's saying in veiled terms is, "If we used too much of Abrams plot and not Johnson's, he and Paramount could demand or sue us for story credit and payment."
Disney execs liked what he did with the film so much that they didn't even have to see its performance to greenlight a new trilogy. They don't care about how much money it makes, they care about the message it sends.
Isaiah Reed
They'r enot blind. They just lost an eye and the other has a cataract the thickness of a quarter, but they aren't blind.
Bentley Martin
the fucking idiots say people joining a site to post a bad review are not actual moviegoers. thats their no1 point for the score being fake. they didnt even think about the fact that most normies probably sign up on any review site is to leave a specific review of something they strongly liked or disliked and a lot of them dont use the site again unless something on a similar level comes along. they dont even acknowledge that it might be possible new accounts or deleted ones arent bots/russian hackers/the alt right. how fucking retarded do you have to be? try that kind of "research" on a scientific paper and every university on this planet is going to fail you.
