Texture of materials stood out awkwardly more that The Fantastic Mr Fox because TFMF the animals were smaller in scale but these characters are all the same size so the film looks like a hobby art project.
Wes Anderson style romantic portrayals are starting to age semi embarasingly. A movie about a girl in 8th grade and a movie about a young girl kidnapping both previewed before this film at the theater I saw it in and I wondered if anyone still believes females are human. I am sorry.
First 15 minutes of audience laughter baffled me. None of the starting jokes felt funny until the Little Pilot fell down unexpectedly. I hope I don't have some sort of Family Guy generation mental problem. But chances are that i do. Still jokes weren't funny even though the crowd laughed for first portion of film.
Step staccato stop start style only works about half the time. The slide scene worked.
The Dog romances seemed super mature dealing with shame identity and survival. The child romances seemed like a garnish. But like i said past their time.
Other than that 10/10 film. Truth. Took a while to get there but it did what it was suppose to do.

If you're coming in with the expectations I had- a funny movie about an island of dogs- you'll probably be disappointed. This movie is as much about the humans as it is about the dogs, and the most interesting bits - visually and plot wise-are about humans. The humor is sparse and usually doesn't deliver, and they also threw in a very annoying American character who serves no purpose but to translate, even though there's already a translator in the movie.
As far as other movies are concerned, 8/10. For Wes Anderson, 6/10.

It's better than Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom. Those movies fell flat with their jokes and Wes Anderson practically parodied himself.
I really enjoyed Isle of Dogs because of how bleak it was. I understand the complaints about the number of characters but I feel that didn't detract much from the movie. It's not good as Fantastic Mr Fox but it's still a worthwhile watch.
