What did Tolkien mean by this?

what did Tolkien mean by this?

>I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours. and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered.

>"I liked white better," I said.

>"White! " he sneered. "It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken."

>"In which case it is no longer white," said I.

What exactly asking? Yes, Saruman's robes changed in the book to reflect him moving to the side of Sauron.

He wants to spin it as Tolkien being a white supremacist, when Saruman of Many Colours is explained in the following paragraph as him starting to break things down to gain deeper knowledge, as white light can be broken down into colours with a prism.
Gandalf however refutes this approach to nature, stating something along the lines that he who breaks things to understand does not understand their intrinsic beauty.

If Saruman had many colors y'all would bitch about him being part of the gay agenda. Give it a fucking rest

That's the other part of OP's argument. When Tolkien wrote LotR, the rainbow was still a rainbow, not the official flag of the LGBT movement.

there any fanart of Saruman dressing like a faggot?

I always imagined the many colored robes to look like a really shiny oil slick. It has all the colors of the rainbow but there's something just corrupting and sneaky about how the colors shift about in an oil puddle.

Theres enough energy in a barrel of oil to power a modern home for two months and keep your ass from freezing to death but here you are talking shit

There's enough oil trapped behind one of your blackheads to power the entire Eastern seaboard for three months and here you are thinking I was talking shit.

Yeah I thought you'd cunt up when I called you out. A bigger man can just admit when he's wrong. Apologize.

this was my interpretation as well user

lol this nigga serious?

There is no way to make this look good

Good interpretation, works with him becoming a flat-out industrialist in the movies. I only remember him destroying the forest for firewood in the books and crossbreeding elves and goblins to create the Uruk-hai. But the movie adds the invention of gunpowder.

this one seems to be the most subtle

Attached: saruman_rainbow.jpg (500x424, 49K)

That's a pretty clever idea on how to visualize it.

>There is no way to make this look good
you lack imagination

He's OP. He's first, and foremost, a gay faggot in the purest sense. And that is not the homosexual interpretation.

dubs don't lie

fine one fanart that pulls it off

Same, but only when shimmering in the light. Hence Gandalf taking a while to notice it wasn't really white

get off your phone and facebook you retarded little faggot

Take your constructive and thoughtful comments and fuck off back to /lit/ you cunt.

Same. It's like we're finishing each other's . . .

imo fine isn't proof he's on a phone, sounds like a psychological typo

sounds like a fat finger typo if you ask me. E is right above D.

I kinda like the direction this is going in. At first the colors could seem silly and whimsical, but then you realize that Saruman has been corrupted and is serving Sauron.

That's the thing. It honestly could be either. This is the most interesting post in this thread. Which was it bros?
That is certainly a context clue worth considering.

The Case of the Anonymous Fat Finger

The Felonious Phonepost Caper

this is a good thread

the red eyes are a nice touch

I’m coming to the end of The Return of the King and am reading it as slowly as I can because the concept of the books ending is severely traumatic and depressing.

I didn’t know it was possible to rely so completely on a fictional world. Nothing will ever come close to matching the perfection of these novels. I am well and truly doomed.

Please tell me there are others here who share this feel.

>name a bad guy Sauron
>name a bad guy's servant Sauronman

What did Tolkien mean by this?

You have Silmarillion and plenty of other shit Tolkien wrote that helps prolong the time you spend in his works, but you can always re-read them. Also, not that similar to Tolkien outside of the genre, but Zelazny's The Chronicles Of Amber is a great series you should read next.

Yes it is pretty nice, however in order to make it work like it is described in the books, aka making it seem white, but with flickering colors in the sunlight, would require lots of editing and cgi, all *just* to make a point about how Saruman has been corrupted. Its a nice touch, but ultimately unnecessary.

>bad guy is called Sauron
>his minion is called Sauron Man
really Tolkien? Really?

Nice dubs, amnesiac samefag.

they could base it off something like pic related

>a flying insect is called the Fly
>a big-ass flying insect is called the Dragonfly

really, English? Really?

wished I saved an user's answer to that awhile ago. It's the literal language and how it translates. Sauronman mean man of skill, forgot how the name breaks up for that htough

iridescence

Attached: $_10.jpg (1300x1300, 659K)

I read The Bridge of Khazad Dum chapter every few weeks because it's so fucking terrific, as are the books in general.

Attached: 92.jpg (1024x640, 153K)

it also would have looked stupid as fuck

I think this look could work best if the cloth was a dark color underneath. It looks shit no matter what with lighter colors or white.

have more LOTR artwork

The mighty dwarves were killed by fucking goblins lmao

imagine being this much of a brainlet
Gandalf loved nature and the order of the universe. "science and progress" as a justification to destroy can only come from someone who neither understands nor appreciates the raw order expressed by nature and it's mysteries.

sneeds

>Progress
Tolkien was a complete luddite, yes. Why do you think orcs are advanced technologically - but live in a hellhole ruined by their factories, while the good guys are living in a pastoral utopia?

Yes i do agree that they could have done it, maybe like a toned down version of pic related, but in order to make its subtle enough to still be considered white and not stupid looking, they'd probably have to use computer generated effects, which would cost time and resources for an ultimately unnecessary costume.

Attached: dress.jpg (400x400, 27K)

What the fuck is Gandalf doing in this pic? It looks like he's pretending that he's the one destroying Mordor

read The Last Ringbearer

>The novel is based on the premise that the Tolkien account is a "history written by the victors".[2][3] In Eskov's version of the story, Mordor is described as a peaceful country on the verge of an industrial revolution, that is a threat to the war-mongering and imperialistic faction represented by Gandalf (whose attitude has been described by Saruman as "crafting the Final Solution to the Mordorian problem") and the elves.

Attached: sandsofgorgoroth-sm.jpg (872x700, 202K)

That't the real redpill

This is the moment where he declares “The age of Sauron is ended.”

>Gandalf knew Bilbo had the ring since their adventures in the lonely mountain, he even said so
>He waits until Saruman falls to Sauron's side and only then starts Frodo on his adventure
>Once Saruman has fallen and the position of white wizard was open Gandalf "coincidentally" died making him perfect to be resurrected as the new white wizard
>With his new powers he only uses them to gain favor and loyalty with the people of middle earth i.e. freeing Theoden, installing a new leader in Gondor, bring back the rohirrim
Gandalf used the ring and Sauron to gain power and favor in middle earth. I mean why else would he wait so long to investigate the ring?

Pearlescent.

>Saruman of MANY COLOURS!!!

Attached: aruman.jpg (480x360, 9K)

Because that's literally how it is in the real world?

Do you not? Science and progress are the reason we’re wasting our lives on this stupid website.

>Saruman's robes were made out of shiny rubber
It all makes sense now.

>many colors
>red
BRAVO BAKSHI

You could achieve a more subtle effect by coating cloth with a thin translucent layer of that same material. With as much time and care that went into everything else hand-crafted for the trilogy. You could have had the actual thread coated, then woven into the robe.
