Coming up with original stories isn't really the issue. There are plenty of original screenplays that just never get made, and plenty that do get made which don't turn a profit or turn a very small one.
Comic book movies are so attractive to studios because of of the already built-in audience. It's basically a sure bet and a great way to multiply their dollars as long as they don't completely fuck it up.

If you consider the taste in 'waifus' on Sup Forums going back to its early days (a board in a large way informed by sensibilities of a generation who grew up on anime) you might notice the preferred girls often have features that resemble anime girls. I've been speculating that there might be a new standard of beauty leaning towards this, in certain swaths of the population.
It wouldn't be impossible. East Asia already has a beauty standard that's very different from the west, but I think ours might be turning to something taking in some of those standards.

Branding recognition is enough. You don't need to have read the comics to know who Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America are. They had pretty strong branding and exposure in other media and merchandise - cartoons, tv, action figures, t-shirts, you name it.
By now, the fact that there are comics hardly matters. The MCU has had a lot of success with lesser known properties like GOTG, Black Panther, Ant Man, Doctor Strange, but they lead in with the more recognizable ones and built their audience from there.

Beast explained in First Class that her shape shifting powers would cause her to age slower than others. The line was probably put in to explain why Magneto and Xavier look like senior citizens in the other X-Men films while she looks like a woman in her thirties. But she is the only character that gets a pass due to exposition. What's even worse is that Dark Phoenix takes place only ten years before the first X-Men movie and they still didn't put any effort to age up Xavier and Magneto. At least dye Fassbender's hair white.
