that guy is wrong. The tin-man doppelganger is intentionally trying to keep her in the lighthouse so it can mirror her; it's pretty obvious that it knocked her out on purpose both times (the first time wasn't a mirroring accident, otherwise it would've tried to mirror her falling over) because she was trying to escape before it was finished copying her. The first time it knocked her out it used some CQC move to take her down that it probably learned from absorbing the mind of a soldier from a previous expedition. Second time it chased after her to the door and was intentionally crushing her lungs to knock her out again.
The tin-man doppelganger can think for itself (or at least it is being controlled by the smimmer's hivemind, if it exists) and it definitely knew that Lena was there - despite what Lena surmises at the end.
Maybe the doppelganger already has some kind of mind-link to her because of all the refraction / scrambling connecting her mind (and echoes of minds lost) within the shimmer's "unfathomable mind". It then uses this mental connection to try and copy her mind and memories to the doppelganger, w/ mirroring being an involuntary side effect of that direct link it makes to her.
Maybe this mirroring process takes a long time, and so by knocking her out twice it was able to make the copying process a lot easier for itself since it just had to lay next to her as she was unconscious.
