a dream that i had after watching several episodes of "Would I Lie To You":
Rob Brydon is testing out an adult sized tricycle on the set of WILTY during the show. One of the guest is an army general
who is standing on the floor of the set along with Rob and his trike while the other guest and audience look on.
Rob begins cycling towards the general leaving the general with no choice but to move out of the way to avoid being hit.
Rob comments: "Did you see that!? An Army General afraid of a welshman!". Army general tries to close the distance between them to save face,
Rob interrupts "No no, you stay there." Rob cycles the trike to behind his desk, gets off and sits back on the stool at his desk,
one of the other guests says "That doesn't look very comfortable." at which Rob angrily replies "Well it's not meant to be comfortable is it!!"

They really messed up with Bill Bailey as well, they called him in on short notice to film another series but he couldn't make it because he was filming abroad at the time, and instead of getting a temporary guest captain they just ended his contract and replaced him with Fielding. Because before the filming starts they're instructed to applaud at funny moments because it looks and sounds better on telly.
I've been to many stand-up gigs and a lot of the time the comedian tells you it's better if you just laugh and not applaud because it ruins the flow and it feels disingenuous. People automatically applaud because they think they're supposed to because they see people do it on telly. What a comedian really wants to hear is genuine laughter, not forced applause.

It's different for stand-up and television. Comedians doing a stand-up show want to perform their act and hear people laughing at their work, but on television applause is encouraged so people watching at home think it's extra funny. It doesn't get in the way either and probably even helps with the editing afterwards. It's seen like a currency or status on panel shows, you hear panelists talking about how it took 20 minutes to get their first round of applause.
