Honestly, this just seems kinda boring to me.
The characters already seemed disposable around their introduction, and we've had quite a bit of blatant "everyone's gonna be backstabbing everyone, just so we're clear" telegraphing, so there's no shock value there. We also don't have any emotional detachment to the characters beyond maybe a shallow "neat design", so there's no gut punch either. We already know that Oscar's a dick and the palace is a death trap, so this doesn't help us characterize anything or anyone either. Making something invisible appear this way isn't exactly interesting in an "oh that's a clever solution to a tricky puzzle!" way either (if anything it's stupid - if you're testing for traps this way, you'll have to be sure there's only a few rooms between you and the last room, which the author knows, but the characters don't).
There's not even detailed gorn to jerk off to here.

Either by doing something spontaneously heroic at some point (or its a self-sacrifice), or he's bribed by Mammon and survives simply by being part of the trap.
