Those were all one main villains and a bunch of one shot ones. A main character is a whole other matter. Voltron and Trollhunters have also killed mooks, but never a major protagonist.

They weren't allowed to kill off Shiro, or at least keep him off the team for too long, since they have toys to sell and they can't do that without one of their main characters.
They also didn't want the show to spend too much in the past, so that's why the origin episode wasn't a two-parter like the showrunners wanted, and had to be rushed as hell.
