Why did they even make Quagmire hate Brian, anyways? It comes out of nowhere

Why did they even make Quagmire hate Brian, anyways? It comes out of nowhere.

I mean, it kinda makes sense for it to be a thing.

There was a period where Brian was the intelligent dog... but then most episodes had him be preachy. Then more and more up his ass. Then into one of the worst characters on the show in terms of hypocrisy.

He deserves some hate, it just builds with each season

A person as shitty as Quagmire would be extra aware of other people's shittiness, as he justifies himself with his "I work at a soup kitchen Brain, NEVER SEEN YOU THERE" comment. It's important to keep in mind when you deal with people like this that they might not be wrong, but they are still coming from someplace cruel, provided they're the ones seeking you out to tell you that. Otherwise it's just projective defense.

Same reason why Seth then made his sci fi show, with unlimited possibilities about a captain with the XO as his ex wife

Without melodrama, they would have to write real drama. But that would be work.

Because dude, Brian tried to fuck his dad/mom. Whatever else Quagmire kept inside for all the t he years he'd known Brian, that was straw that broke the camel's back.

>Why did they even make Quagmire hate Brian, anyways?

Forced setup for drama and future "jokes" like "I fucked your dad."

I think him fucking his Dad/Mom was after the sudden he hates Brian reveal.

Brian DID fuck his dad/mom but he didn't know that at the time.

did he beat Brian up because he actually cared about his dad/mom or just an excuse to beat him up?

Probably a bit of both, but mostly the latter.

i'll never get it either. quagmire is ten times worse than brian could ever be. like just because you've been to a soup kitchen doesn't mean you can hold it over other people and also we wouldn't need soup kitchens if we changed the economy to socialism and addressed homelessness in a meaningful way. it's almost as if their entire conversation was contrived by the writers to appeal to people who hate athiests

"Jerome Is the New Black" (Season 8, Episode 7) - Quagmire's speech to Brian; Quagmire's father has not yet been introduced as a character

"Quagmire's Dad" (Season 8, Episode 18) - Quagmire's dad, Dan, is introduced as a character; he undergoes a sex change operation and becomes Ida; Brian fucks Ida; Quagmire finds out about this from Ida, then beats the shit out of Brian

I mean, not for nothing, man, but get your goddamn timeline right.

There was also the comment about him not seeing his son when just the episode before he gave up his daughter and just fucked right off. At least when Brian's son left, Brian had changed him and his son left him to take care of his mom since he was a different person.
Sucks they took off everything past season 8 off netflix.

i dont see why the soup kitchen comment in his rant is being taken so literally. it was mostly just a example he made to get a specific point across. hell i wouldnt even be surprised if he had never worked at a soup kitchen. it wasnt so much about not seeing brian at the soup kitchen and trying to be high-and-mighty about it, over just trying to drive the "brian does nothing for other people" point in a bit harder.

The "soup kitchen" comment was Quagmire pointing out that Brian loved to bitch about the world's problems and whatnot, but never picked up a finger to help change things. It's a criticism of the kind of slacktivism you see on Twitter and Tumblr.

>Blah blah blah you're a terrible person Brian blah blah but I work at a soup kitchen and I'm aware of how bad I am so I'm a better person even though I'm a woman abducting rapist blah blah

This whole scene was retarded.

it's still an empty ad hominem attack. not all of us have time off work to go help in a soup kitchen. also once it's already staffed with volunteers, the only thing some of them ask for is donations and food WHICH NOT ALL OF US CAN AFFORD. Brian has had a job before in the show but were there jobs available in Quahog? it isn't slacktivism just because your unrealistic expectations aren't being met

>brian does nothing for people
well 1) he's a dog and 2) if quagmire tried to be friends with him instead of be a little bitch then maybe brian and quagmire could have gone to the fucking soup kitchen together. quagmire tripped the fuck out instead of saying "hey, i don't see you do x y and z. why don't we both do those things together to hang out?"

>even though I'm a woman abducting rapist
Was this proven in a court of law? Then shut up innocent till proven guilty reeee

It really does. It also makes Quagmire seem like an even worse person. Brian is fucking insufferable, yes (due to the shit writers who went out of their way to take everyone in the main cast from entertainingly stupid people who make random references to bullshit to being fucking terrible people that make random references to bullshit.) but Quagmire is a literal, unrepentant rapist.
Its like watching a serial killer getting a lecture from pedophile that also fucks baby cats.

stalin was never responsible for murder then. he was never taken to court, so you know.

bush jr isn't responsible for war crimes. he said god told him to invade iraq, so you know.

>like watching a serial killer get a lecture from a pedo that also fucks baby cats

Not really, if you knew anything about earlier family guy you could see it coming.

oh man, sorry, im not arguing that quagmire has any reason to make any claims he did in his rant. just that people are not understanding what he actually meant by it.

quagmire is just a dick that has no room to talk. sorry i didnt make that clear.

responding the line about Brian trying to fuck Glenn's dad.

pointing out that there is no try because he actually did it.

Time to abandon thread

Quagmire is at least honest about the ways that he's terrible and doesn't think he's better than others.
On the other hand Brian is a hypocrite and thinks that he's better than everyone else and smarter despite being an objectively terrible person/dog.

Brian has always been a moutpiece for Seth's politics. The "Quagmire hates Brian" thing is an attempt to address it and be self aware in some 'deep' way. When a character goes completely out of character to deliver or be affected by a speech, it's usually because the writers want to monologue to the audience. It's irritating as fuck.

The psychiatrist in Rick & Morty pissed me off for the same reason. A few episodes earlier we saw that Rick was pretty much immune to attempts to manipulate him psychologically but for the speech to work they had to make him act out of character and sit down and take it without any comebacks.

Then in both examples the character reverts back to normal the next episode.

besides how out of nowhere this concept was, it also kinda ruined Quagmire's character cause after this point they just kept showing him as bitter and angry a lot of the time, in ways that just weren't fun to watch

>There was a period where Brian was the intelligent dog... but then most episodes had him be preachy. Then more and more up his ass. Then into one of the worst characters on the show in terms of hypocrisy.
I blame them having him and Jillian break up, Brian's ego wasn't much of a problem before that point(honestly it kinda proves a theory that I've had for a long time now, if a show has two characters start a relationship during the show's run and said relationship lasts more than a season or two, it ending will often be to the show's detriment, same thing happened to King of The Hill with Bobby & Connie*, and to a lesser extent in American Dad with Steve and that fat goth girl**)

*this lead to Bobby getting saddled with a whole bunch of really bad b-plots involving him trying to get a new girlfriend, as well as Connie basically disappearing for large stretches of the show for most it's later half

*in this case it didn't effect American Dad's overall quality but it did have a detrimental effect on Steve's own plots, since him being single has lead to them ridiculously overusing the "Steve tries to get a girlfriend/laid" plot(especially aggravating because more than any other recurring plot the show uses you know how it's going to resolve, so it's near impossible to be interested in it)

I would totally do brian

Steve being single also led to more "Steve and Snot are gay for each other" jokes/storylines/episodes and the gag never gets any better.

And speaking of KOTH, Luanne as a character improved somewhat after her relationship with Buckley ended via explosion. When she hooked up with Lucky, on the other hand, she seemingly turned into everything she had tried to avoid becoming - just with a house instead of a trailer.

>A few episodes earlier we saw that Rick was pretty much immune to attempts to manipulate him psychologically but for the speech to work they had to make him act out of character and sit down and take it without any comebacks.
I thought Rick didn't take the psychiatrist's words at heart.

He didn't respond to her because, as a scientist and a genius, he knew that he couldn't make a snarky response to the truth. He didn't take her words to heart because...well, like she said: He would rather have died than admit she was right and start doing the work. Beth forgave Rick and opted to get drunk with him later on for much the same reason (minus the fatalistic nihilism). Morty and Summer wanted to do the work and wanted at least Beth to do it with them. But Beth and Rick basically said "fuck that therapist bitch" because they didn't want to do the work.

In a meta sense, it was Seth's interpretation on how the fans have come to hate Brian for being a shit tier arrogant liberal and failure as a writer.

Come to think of it, Quagmire has "dated" minors before plus he has a weird fondess for cats.

>Quagmire has "dated" minors before

He was also literally convicted of statutory rape before his mother pulled a Quagmire and got him out of jail.

Family Guy had simplistic but workable character dynamics but along the way it lost them in favour of the cast just tearing into each other. The whole joke with Brian, seen across Seth's earlier pilots, is a dog that is intelligent enough to speak English and indulge in culture is paired with a simplistic human bumbler. Eventually they decided instead that Brian should be a shot at contrarian liberals. The kind of guy who talks loudly about social and political problems while doing nothing to help and just trying to convince himself and others that he doesn't have major problems he's ignoring. There were hints of an ego early on but nothing like the character the show has settled on Brian being now.

Exactly, and don't forget that time when Lois sent him to rape Connie.

Or the time he found that high school cheerleader tied up in a bathroom and said "jackpot".

That's the joke. That Quagmire, the one-dimensional sex fiend and predator, looks down on Brian.
I'm not saying it's a good joke. Nothing about FG post season 3 is good, but that's the reasoning.

didn't season 4 have pop star meg?

Like the user said: Nothing about FG post season 3 is good.
