ITT: artist design quirks

ITT: artist design quirks.

For example, Anka and giving male characters beards, plus those weird sleeve things that come halfway down the hand.

Greg Land: draws porn in childrens books, gets away with it.

Jim Lee - skullcap with top cut off, hair out

Anika gives men beards because it’s the only way you can tell them apart from the women

shouldn't his beard and hair be made out of steel wool?

Im more worried about the downstairs

This is always really over-exaggerated when people talk about Anka IMO. I'd love to see him on a New Gods book or something.

objectively the dumbest shit

It's canon that he can and has had sex in steel form

Man, she's lucky she didn't get hurt doing that.

Hated it as a kid, love it now

Now this headband-mask thing, that fucking sucks

Nah that's fine, if I had to pick out one 90's aesthetic that I hate now it's the overuse of cybernetics.

You're wrong. Open-top headsock is the objectively best aesthetic.

I miss cybernetics desu

Isn't that the reason why he and Rogue had a thing?

I am the only one who thinks Anka is actually a good artist?

Brett Booth loves diagonal panels and drawing people's hands as wings. It's in pretty much every book he works on.

They did it because without it, some characters would look like giant condoms.

Rogue could steal his powers even when he was in steel form iirc.

You could just say that Kris Anka is a gayfag who likes his men to be bears and his women to be men (who are morphing into bears).

Also his costume design is fucking shit.

>I wish we got Magik's Phoenix costume back but slightly edited so it makes more sense for a Non-Phoenix character
>Anka redesigns it

I think Frank Cho has a thing for big asses and tits.
But it's just a hunch.

Why does Anka hate boobs? Was he not breastfed? Did he get titty slapped and it caused him trauma?

he's just gay, but I think she has a bit more than he usually draws

I despise this immensely.

he's bi actually.

Van Sciver - Jowls and scowls

He's good, but he's also got a stiff style, I feel. Not much range to his redesigns, it's just making them slicker and more "modern," and he's great at that, don't get me wrong, but he also has some noticeable shortcomings.

This guy has his own YouTube channel where he’s looking back and giving some insight into everything he’s ever worked on, giving art tutorials and advice. It’s awesome. The name of the channel is “ComicArtistPro Secrets” if you’d be interested in checking it out. He’s a pretty cool guy, too

>and he's great at that

I disagree. Anka's "redesigns" are almost always taking the same look, flattening it out, and adding a bunch of unnecessary lines.

See his Carol and Star-Lord.

He did the best modern Captain Marvel hands-down. She had the modern style but was still feminine. I think he’s pretty great in interiors usually, but they rely on him for designs too much. His Spider-Man 2099 outfit is cool but the white parts need to have been dark blue

thanks for the plug Van

That's fucking awful.

Why do so many modern artists not understand the value of simplicity in design? You can't just throw shit together and hope that some inflated sense of "realism" gets the job done.

It's not fucking hard to create something iconic and memorable. It's the absolute basics of art.

It’s basically as complex as 2099’s original costume

I think we're actually in agreement here. He's great at his style, which is flattening them out, as you say. I think his Star-Lord design is pretty nifty. The problem is that that's his only trick, and you appreciate Star-Lord a hell of a lot less after seeing him pull the same tricks with Storm or Carol.

You might be blind, my friend. Original 2099 does not have a heap of pointless panel lines, pointless tiny scattered polygons, armpit straps, dumb mouth line, dumb half-boots, retarded arm gadget ports, or comical shoe soles. It also doesn't have an exploded mess of a skull/spider emblem, nor does it have such a poor color balance and color scheme. There is no design philosophy in the new suit. It's just a bunch of shit thrown together.

...

retard

its such an ugly design
only Cyclops and Gambit made it work

DC is healthy, please keep the cancer confined to only one patient.

You just listed aspects of the new suit, not what was wrong with them. Artists aren’t very lazy, they can draw one line wrapped around the forearm.

The white is fucking stupid though

He's in denial. If he was genuinely attracted to the female form, he'd draw one once in a while.

Why does his shirt have a button that turns on his powers?

This suit looks comfy

At the time his powers were broken, (it was assumed to have been as a result of the Phoenix Five storyline but then Bendis revealed it was nano-sentinels)
Forge and Doctor Nemesis built Colossus a costume that let him control his powers better

>Cable
>Wolverine
>Deadpool
>Colossus

Is Domino the town-bike of the X-Force?

Does he talk about his political views too?

He talks about his opinions on injecting politics into comics, which is that you shouldn’t do that. But no, he doesn’t espouse any political ideology

And Wally.

Her power is to get lucky user, I don't know why you're so surprised when she gets lucky. She isn't the town bike, she just stumbles into good dick on accident because that's her life.

this ship is much much better than Colossus and Kitty

But he doesn't

If this man would just realize the colorist drags down his work so much.
I'm not even that into his art but it doesn't have to be as bad as it is.

and everyone is a dehydrated muscle monster

>It also doesn't have an exploded mess of a skull/spider emblem
Dude that's always been the 2099 emblem. And the pointless panel lines are to give the impression that the suit is some kind of futuristic plastic armor instead of spandex, because its litterally from the future. You'll notice they converge on the joints, implying the construction is looser there thus more easily allowing movement. The back of the knees even have a completely different texture there to show an absence of the plasti-armor material.

I know you guys hate anything not in the classic cape style, but the design elements you thino are pointless do serve a purpose.

He actually only left those parts white as a placeholder and the editor told him to keep it that way.

i have no nostalgia for the old 2099 suit and can say the white suit looks way more appropriate for something actually futuristic

there's nothing present in the old design suggesting it couldn't have been made or worn in present day

Wally only made it work as Kid Flash. His modern suit's red and his hair color blend together too much.

>generic thin kevlar with seams
vs.
>skin-tight liquid metal nano mesh with zero seams

Tell me, which of these is more futuristic? Fucking idiot.

...

...

Was this just a Jim Lee thing? Felt like everyone did it in the 90s?

...

Wasn't it a cheap suit Miguel designed so it'd be intentionally easy to fix, after he was inspired by a Day of the Dead costume he wore?

I remember when they gave a small call back to this during the Inferno tie in for Secret Wars, Dom and Peter were cops, partners who were fucking in the showers

What the fuck is up with his legs?

Isn’t that the point of her, being lucky?

Basically. The web cape is a torn up antigrav cloth from a Thorite's glider, which is the most high tech thing about Miggy's original suit and even then it's a slapdash thing.

Huh. You might be onto something here

Jim Cheung: Wider heads, can draw exactly two different faces. Lots of random dots and lines to make stuff look rougher.

Mark Bagley definitely has a thing for teen girls in midriffs. Shit was all over the place in Ultimate Spider-man

Didn't it start as a Liefeld thing and everyone followed that? I think Shaft had this design as early as 1980's.

jackets over tights is his favorite

>those rogue tits
nice

That X-23 redesign does things to me

>tfw ANY X-23 design does things for me

man he does draw everyone flat as shit.

Anka just had to draw Colossus shirtless, huh?

Anka's a pin-up/cover artist but doesn't really know anything about visual storytelling or comic storytelling or anything. Same as most of the people coming up nowadays from Tumblr and such. They need to read a lot of old comics, manga, etc. to get that. I have no clue if the Kubert School is still any good but going there can't hurt (and hell, just study Joe Kubert in general even if war comics aren't your thing).

Chaykin: Buzz Lightyear chins and goofy arms

Secret Wars: Inferno was kind of fun

It's a problem of getting caught up in modern coloring and the desire to be detailed. I like his stuff from X-Force in the late '90s a lot more.

what happened to colossus' arm?

Anka's worst habit is trying to give all female characters that surge hair style.

It got mangled, poisoned and kinda possessed in a demon attack during one of his many failed rescue missions for his sister

He found her Soul sword and the demon in his arm reacted with it and turned into soul armor

gurihiru: draw everyone the cutest they've ever been drawn

there was an artist on Teen Titans that drew every girl wearing a thong no matter what

if i didnt recognize any of these characters id assume they were all men. especially emo daken

>dat Miracle a qt

>Is Domino the town-bike of the X-Force?

No, Wolverine is.

Jackets with the sleeves rolled up, that are too small to ever zip up.

my problem with the white suit is it looks way too much like every other modern costume that has the Armor look and how is liquid armor less futuristic than regular armor?

I'll let him off for that Emma Frost tummy.

Hm, I don't know if it's actually an improvement or not. It feels more "classic," and I agree that that's kind of comfy, but the colour palette here just doesn't work quite as well, to my eye.

The liquid armor makes it look like every other spandex outfit. If you can figure out a way to make it not then great, but just saying it's made from super future stuff doesn't make it look that way. Show, don't tell.

That costume is terrible. The only people who like it are deluding themselves or are false flagging Barryfags who think the real Flash costume should only belong to him.

Same faggots who go "Well I think it would help Wally to get a new identity..."

>a bloo bloo he draws sexy men and that makes my weewee tickle so i get angry because i cant face what i am

We're all here for you, user.

I actually kind of like it better than the normal 2099 suit. I know nostalgiafags worship it, but the Dia de los Muertos story never held up for me, and this one looks more futuristic.

It's just a shame the 2099 book isn't allowed to be set in 2099 anymore. They also should've kept the web cape, but I'm crazy for armor+cape.

That's just because it was the early 2000s.

God I miss those times.

>If you can figure out a way to make it not then great, but just saying it's made from super future stuff doesn't make it look that way. Show, don't tell.
Vidya games (Shattered Dimensions and Edge Of Time) did it.
But there's no point to overcomplicate a suit with a shitload of details in the comics. And back then you had to think about other artists and the fact that one day they may have to draw this suit too. They can miss some of your stupid and tiny details which wouldn't look good and consistent. Consistency is very important. If your costume design is too complex to draw it consistently with every detail retained then this design isn't very good.

>logical seams are too complex
Western standards for complexity are woefully low.

POUCHES. POUCHES. POUCHES. EXXXTREEEME POUCHES AND LOTS OF TEEEETHS.
