Venture Bros.

>a depressing cartoon that was bullied by its network

Moral Orel?

The Thief and the Cobbler is one of the closer equivalents, but the only bits left are what they dug out of WB's dumpsters.

Definitely, season 3 can fuck you up

fuck off weeb

in what way are you looking for the eva of cartoons? are you talking tone and story, or the fact that eva revitalized animation in japan?

In what way similar to evangelion?

I watched Moral Orel before I did Eva, and before I'd watched MO, I'd seen it described as the Evangelion of western animation, so this for me.

Op what exactly do you mean by that?

>evangelion of cartoons
Are we going to get an elaboration of what that means, or any details? Do mean action/drama? Where are you asking the comparison to be from? You're not being very specific.

wakfu

Unironically rick and morty. Both shows have fucking self obsessed fanbases that think they're series ate the most intelligent works of art to be made since Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
They deem anyone who doesn't "get it" or like it a hater or some type of idiot with a low iq.
Both shows are fun and have imfluenced their respective mediums but neither are the second coming of christ that their fans like to claim it to be.
I guess the equivalent to both would be watching a Zack Snyder film.

Ed, Edd and Eddy.
Similar characters and themes although Ed, Edd and Eddy doesn't have mechs obviously.

Samurai Jack, great show but piss poor ending.

Probably the first few seasons of The Simpsons. Both really reshaped the landscape of their respective market, birthed a myriad of imitators after their conception, and were hard nosed subversive takes of their respective genres.

And they've both been milked to the point that their initial appeal has been drowned out by financial interest.

Evangelion is a cartoon OP

What's the anime equivalent of The Ricky Gervais Show? I don't have to tell you what that means. You just have to guess whatever I'm thinking of.

Can we just have this be a moral orel thread? :(

Towards the end of NGE the animation is almost as good

Cartoons that have an existential theme. Slightly serious if possible

There's that CG show where the VA's went off script and they just left it in the show.

name? sounds rather cool

Ai Channel. Maybe the ending segments of Lucky Star if you're looking for a radio show.

12 oz mouse not even joking

first post best post

DEEPEST LORE

Ignore all the other garbage in this thread OP

This is the correct answer Western Animation is terrible since it's shoehorned constantly into being a comedy of some sort. But Venture Bros takes that does it's damnedest to be better than that, much like Eva it takes the conventions of previous adventure series like Johnny Quest, or the old DC cartoons and plays with their core concepts, theme, and archetypes. Dr Venture for example is a brilliant deconstruction of the elderly mentor father figure by being a miserable asshole, whom despite being brilliant is unfilled and as a deep rooted bile for everyone around him, his "boys" being no exception

Rick and Morty: The Rickatlantis Mixup

It's Such a Beautiful Day
Plague Dogs
Watership Down
When the Wind Blows
The Last Unicorn
Hedgehog in the Fog

Rick and Morty

I haven't seen Moral Orel but Moral Orel is the Evangelion of cartoons

cartoons are bad, they are just kid stuff. there are no serious cartoons like NGE that come from the western world

honestly, the only cartoons worth watching are Looney Tunes and old Tom & Jerry

modern cartoons are shitty, there are some decent 90s ones but they are like cartoon cartoons and ren & stimpy ... nothing that is comparable to NGE

user pls

>there are no serious cartoons like NGE that come from the western world
There are plenty of mature feature films and a lot of shorts. Look at literally any Sup Forums chart.
And NGE isn't that deep anyway.

>honestly, the only cartoons worth watching are Looney Tunes and old Tom & Jerry
I see, you're the man of taste.

Ive seen more complaints than examples of these supposed rick and morty fans
But, i dont go to reddit so I wouldnt know.

There is no such cartoon that can be comparable to Evangelion in both tone or animation quality. Western animation is fucked.

Evangelion has one overarching message..
>Even though humans can and often do hurt each other, sometimes they choose not to, and that is what makes human interaction worthwhile.

Moral Orel in a nutshell.

>now you are imagining rick & morty drawn as evangelion

It hurts so much boys. Why do western animators have to be such hacks?

>when the fanart of Rick and Morty looks better than the actual show
youtube.com/watch?v=oIscL-Bjsq4

>What is the evangelion of cartoons?

We don't like pretentious emo-fests.

Probably this tbqh fampai

Scooby Doo. Both have been remade countless times to try to suck every penny out of the franchise.

>Even though humans can and often do hurt each other, sometimes they choose not to, and that is what makes human interaction worthwhile.
Yeah, I don't see how you get that message in a series built on awkward teenage interactions, fan service, and constant references to Christian and Jewish mysticism. You could just as easily derive that moral from the Gundam franchise (literally every installment), but that doesn't mean it was an intentional, overarching message.

>constant references to Christian and Jewish mysticism
Those references don't even have any actual substance. They were made just for the sake of cool imagery.

Seriously? Fucking "Hedghehog's Dilemma"? Did you not watch End of Evangelion?

>fan service
There was none.
>but that doesn't mean it was an intentional, overarching message
It was.

Mandatory.
youtube.com/watch?v=aNvqtKv1bPo

I think he means Ghost Stories, which was so bad that when they dubbed it into English they just let the VAs say whatever dumb shit they felt like and left it in
youtube.com/watch?v=SxJ4VWoeOzs

You mean overly pretentious with religious imagery that the staff admit was only put in because it looks cool? I got nothing

Also, the theme of evangelion was telling you to let go of escapist fiction and both endings were telling you to go outside and stop watching anime

As the most famous deconstruction of an entire genre piece by piece?
Watchmen.

As a comic-of-age story rife with commentary about expectations from the rest of society creating manchildren and womanchildren oblivious to others? Scott Pilgrim.

Depression porn about how screwed up people are? Bojack Horseman or Moral Orel. Maybe Daria.

Giant robot fights? Megas XLR.

As pedo fapbait? I’d say whatever is popular at the moment. Star VS, or Ben10 or something.

>It's Such a Beautiful Day

I hate to quote a Rogan movie, but that shit willfuck you up for life.

The Rick and Morty fanbase is almost exactly the same as the Evangelion fanbase t b h

>Nihilistic children who think they are smarter than 99% of the population because they watch a tv show
>they think everyone who doesn't like it are too stupid to get it

>As a comic-of-age story rife with commentary about expectations from the rest of society creating manchildren and womanchildren oblivious to others?
I never got this from Scott Pilgrim. Pls explain.

This guy is on point

Dickens is a hack!

Why does it seem like any time anyone mentions religious references in in Eva, someone has to point this out? I know they have no substance. Everyone knows, and I didn't so much as imply that they had any meaning.

"Hedgehog's Dilemma" is the English name of an Eva episode called "Rain, After Running Away". I've only seen End of Evangelion once, and I don't recall the dilemma itself being mentioned.

No fan service... in Evangelion. Riiiight.

>It was
Well, if the guy who denies that fucking Evangelion has fan service says so, who am I to argue?

Everything that Anno has ever worked on has been massively overrated to hell and back and back again

Oh yeah I know it, that dub is no jokes my number 1 best dubbing job ever unironically, it was like literally shitposting/abridged series before the internet made it happen

I’d say prrtentious is up to taste, but Tragedy Of Man is up there.

Its a movie where Satan, less evil and more just a jaded asshole that humans will only talk to after being cast from Eden, and Adam take a trip through human history. At each point starting in ancient Egypt, then Greece, then Rome, medieval France, the Crusades, the French Revolution, the 1920’s, WW2, and finally the far future then the entropic heat death of the universe, Adam marvels at the beauty and faith of the time but Satan points out the faults as Eve drifts further and further away from him. Finally Adam debates suicide, knowing that the post-Eden future will never be as good and man will never find higher purpose, just superior ignorance and cruelty. He stops upon finding out Eve is pregnant, discovering man’s only purpose and happiness is simple faith and fatherhood.

youtu.be/0eSdOPcHum8

that is something where the religious theming is important to the narrative, this is not the case with Eva. Multiple staff members, including Anno, have come out and said any and all religious symbolism in the show was only put in because it looked/sounded cool, mysterious and complicated

Not the best choice since Moral Orel has been said, but Adventure Time in a lot of ways. Constant teen angst, obscure symbolism, overarching coming of age theme, deep moral dilemma and discussion. It's got the disadvantage in comparison since it's much longer form and its usually much lighter in tone

Not so much the movie because it came out before the comics ended, which itself is a VERY anime thing so there’s some relation there, but most characters are oblivious to each other and their own situation.

Ramona is literally controlled by what is essentially a consumerist system that was created by a pretentious guy oblivious to other people as anything but objects to play with, Ramona copes but doesn’t escape it by drifting through life and not forming positive bonds with anyone. Scott literally rewrote ALL of his own memories with him as a hero as a coping mechanism against growing as a person which would have required coming to terms with who he is. He was actually a piece of shit thug who fought constantly for little reason and used people as props in his life, and that dissonance between his own delusions and reality keeps him from actually relating to other human beings.

Most of the rest of the cast, in particular Knives, are normal people who tried to become caricature personalities such as “cool groupie” or “leader of a band” which didn’t mesh with reality much better than Scott. Only by abandoning what they “should” be and just being what they are do they move on with their lives. Kim was left emotionally stunted where Scott left her.

Wallace and Scott’s sister are the only major characters that have managed to grow the fuck up by both disregarding the expectations of society and also managing to actually be part of it.

All basically Eva shit, where the entire cast are stuck in a position they can’t actually fulfil, are stuck as adult children, or have almost no ability to connect to other people left.

Moral Orel is literally some edgy comic's take on Davy & Goliath and was made for the sole purpose of allowing him to vent his perspectives on Christianity in Middle America while taking potshots at organized religion in general.

It has nothing in common with Neon Genesis Evangelion, you delusional neckbeards.

Bojack Horseman

What is the Daily Lives of Highschool Boys of Sup Forums?
No really, I want to know.

Finish watching the series.

They set it up with two seasons of D&G parody, then bring it all crashing down by revealing the comedic wholesomeness was all because we were watching from the Davey-expy’s perspective, in season 3 you see it from the adult perspective where nobody believes anything they tell him, everyone is somewhere on the axis of screwed up and asshole, and the disillusionment Orel faces. Rather than people cheerfully racist and bigoted, its just a town of racist bigots trying to keep the local innocent child from bothering them with questions they don’t want to answer. The theme of a character yanked forcefully out of childhood and into the cruel hypocritical adult world by an abusive immature father meshes well with Eva.

>Finish watching the series.
Meeehhhh. Okay, maybe I will.

Well that is a tough one since DLHB is pretty much pure comedy without some special gimmick and I thought of a few cartoons set in High School but they all have something special going if not they are outright not comedy... maybe the nearest I can think so is Clone High?

This. At least Rock and Morty doesn't have horrendous pacing, like Eva.

Or blew the entire budget before the end of it so Anno can tell us that Shinji and Asuka are pretty much Adam and Eva 2.0

yeah make sure you're mentally prepared for its such a beautiful day before you watch it.

What's the serial experiments lain of western animation?

Since we're continuing this, what's the Western "Welcome to the NHK"?

Mainly the humor and plot.

I have a friend who is really into EVA to the point where he knows the series in different orders and has seen it all. He is also unironically a massive Rick fan.

Anecdotal, but amusing.

Well I'm also a dual EVA fan and Rick and Morty fan. Science fiction is a super fucking narrow genre and I also enjoy general spec. But some sf fans only enjoy sf and hate fantasy/horror/alt hist.

No it won't, calm the fuck down.

The pacing is terrible, but in my opinion Eva has better story telling and music than Rick and Morty even if you just considered the best episodes, but then Eva gets overshadowed by some of my favourite authors. In any case, there aren't that many great works so I enjoy them all even if I think that there is a difference in quality.

Evangelion is a cartoon. So Evangelion.

OP.here. ill try your recs like morel orel

I saw this movie recently and the visuals were way too fucking distracting in a way that I've not seen in any animated work before. The different styled clashed not only in aesthetic but also in production value. It's a beautiful work but I wouldn't say it was particularly good at presenting its narrative.

Except the being a 90s hollywood star, Bojack Horseman , It fits the Japanese crippling depression life

...

>pissing off EVA fans is an art

This is the only correct answer.

Ed Edd'n Eddy was the first thing that came to mind, but that's not entirely right. It's hard to find close matches when it comes to different cultures' style of humor and absurdism

When you say christian mindfuckery what about Aeon Flux?

The hedgehog Dilemma is central to the entire show, from the character interactions and motivations to the way the EVAs and AT fields work.

this

Trolling is a art, user.

I'm pretty sure the hedgehog dilemma comes up in a conversation between Ritsuko and Misato.
I agree with you when you say there's fanservice (specially in the rebuilds) but in the original show doesn't have as much as the average weaboo show.

Moral Orel

The rebuilds were a mistake

>non Japanese cartoon made by a borderline nutjob that went down while still in production
This

I’d recommend Steven Universe if you’re looking for more of a wimpy guy fighting his dead mom’s battles with a bunch of women.

The best Anime is still Clanned, never really got why people pick Evangelion as the defining piece of anime when Clanned exists.
