People are obsessed with redemption or sympathetic villains, and while you felt sorry for the alchemist SK as an entity on screen is nothing but pure unadulterated evil, an I loved it.

Yep. The show was produced in widescreen but for a good portion of its run aired in cropped due to network restrictions. They did start airing the widescreen versions at some point, but I don't think those got recorded, at least not as part of the rips we had.

In the Asian markets the show aired in widescreen so we now have it available to us

Seeing the Dark Ones in high quality really manages to hammer in just how utterly *Alien* these things are. They look more like the nightmarish results of some person's demented arts and crafts project than anything that truly belongs in the world of the show.

Even as a kid I thought the show's title sounded more like a pisstake of action/faux anime cartoons from South Park or something, rather than a serious title.

I remember that I used to like this show when it aired, then I years later I thought that it was bad, then I re-watched it last year thinking it would be just nostalgia goggles that made me like it and realized it's much better than I ever thought. There's so many small gags and details I've never noticed and the looks like the animators had fun doing it.

Also imo out of all western shows Super Robot Monkey Team is a contender for the closest the west has ever gotten to anime. Not only was this animated in Japan, but it has a very Japanese premise and aesthetic without going full Kappa Mikey tier. Plus the creator was a big fan of old school anime and it shows.

Downloading the high quality rips right now and damn, these are great. Can't believe we had to watch this show in 240p like animals. We're pretty lucky in a way. Most obscure/forgotten shows are lucky if all their episodes are up online, let alone having presentable quality.
