This is actually fascinating. Technically the character are all still in the 4th grade, because of a writing crutch borrowed from sitcoms that would allow to tell endless stories. But even this crutch cannot save the characters from maturing and changing, because their writers mature and change, taking a different approach.

It's not just the writers. After a certain amount of experience you just can't portray the kids in this show as being innocent and unaware anymore. They've been through and seen too much for them to act like kids and still feel in character.
