You have a state/local militia which is like the national guard but much more relaxed, but still both official and organized.

It's more like "1 weekend a month before your unit gets sent to California for pre-deployment training and then sent for a year long tour to a middle eastern shithole all while you were told that it's a great way to earn some cash in college but you ended getting activated for a deployment so you've just missed nearly 2 years of college"
