Why do you think we have a house (based on population) and a senate (2 per each state)? Our entire government was founded based on the principle of compromise between small states and big states.
Asking to abolishing the electoral college is akin to asking to abolish the Senate.
A lot of countries have a system where the popular vote might not elect the nominee, UK included. It's an old system that they use to try and stop shit like this from happening. Again, in the UK they fucked up on a yes/no question where the popular vote did win

Because of the electoral system, people who don't live in swing states don't bother to vote at all. Because their votes don't count. Because of the electoral system.
Therefor, the popular vote doesn't mean anything, because it doesn't include all those who WOULD go out in vote, if the electoral system didn't exist.

its not a popularity vote, otherwise a few states would dictate everything... hence, the electoral voting system, each state gets x.amount of electoral votes per population.. so every state has an impact not just a few...
the mob vote is a load of malarky. if you didn't pay attention, the name of the country is the United STATES of America. So the states are electing the president, not the people.
It's the same reason you have a senate where every state gets equal say regardless of population. (note that you still get electors based on population)
It's supposed to be a balance patch for OP states but they really need to nerf florida into two different states, and probably Texas and california as well. I say this as a floridian. This country is supposed to be about local rule with a pinch of federal oversight to bind us together and make us powerful and united.

And thank fucking God that it does, because otherwise you'd have your president selected for you by illegals in NYC and LA.
Also, for a long time some states didn't select their electoral college representatives by popular vote.
The USA used to be a lot cooler before Lincoln, Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson, Bush, and Obama expanded the power of the Federal Govt and specifically the Executive Branch to absurd levels.
