Speaking as a lifelong Democrat and a Hillary supporter post-primary, this was, sadly, true. Hillary had no real message beyond "status quo" and "I'm not Trump", neither of which endeared her to the still-suffering rural areas who have received no help from the government (granted, a large part of that was because their elected representatives utterly refused to let Obama's initiatives reach their constituents). Trump, meanwhile, was promising the Rust Belt and coal towns that he'll bring back the factories and put coal back on the map. Despite the impossibilities of his promises, he at least threw them a bone, rather than be painted as the establishment that fucked them over. Had Sanders won the Democratic primary, he could well have won the Midwest and the Presidency.

Turns out that fucking people in the ass for 30 years, especially the majority of the voting population, is a bad idea.

The problem is, when you do everything by the book your opponent knows your every move. Trump didn't play by the book, his campaign was asymmetrical. He ignored her strengths while focusing on her weaknesses. Can't compete in campaign funding? Strategically focus your money where it will have the most impact. Opponent is slinging muck? Bait an attack that leaves your opponent open. Opponent is trying to barn storm Florida and lock you out of the electoral college? Remove Florida from the equation.

Clinton didn't secure her base states, the places she thought she had on lockdown. Trump hit her at home and in doing so reduced the critical need to win Florida. He still won FLA, but the point is he didn't NEED to win FLA anymore. It was just locking his victory up nice and tight.

Then Clinton made a few fuck ups. She did too much pandering. She tried to pander to everyone, and when you pander to everyone you eventually end up alienating everyone. Then she insulted Trumps voters, a bad move in its own right because it galvanized Trumps base. Once her SJW's picked up the whole racist, sexist, xenophobic chant and went out on their own attacking Trump supporters they turned the Clinton Campaign into a treehouse club with a sign that said "no boys allowed".

Dems were counting on their early voting antics to cement the election and not require them to mobilize as hard as they did with the Obama campaign. Obama's grass roots management worked very well but was expensive to run.
