I'll also be surprised if Trump nominates anyone with a "progressive" stance on gay rights to the Supreme Court, which might not matter if no case in that arena ever comes up, but it's scary as hell if it does.

More and more people see gay marriage as a fundamental civil right, which it technically is since marriage itself has been repeatedly interpreted by the Supreme Court as such.
Attacking civil rights is always going to be a major dealbreaker for people, regardless of whether it's at the federal or state level. Especially since gay people exist in every state, and don't always have the money to move out.
Who said anything about Pence forcing it? The point is that he doesn't mind if it gets funded. There are very good reasons why gay people don't want to be anywhere near a place that has gay conversion therapy centers.

They just get to live out their lives and settle down, no issue.
