It's paradoxical They are arguing that Brexit could be reversed, and hence a50 doesn't necessarily mean leaving the EU, in order to get the Supreme Court to overturn the High Court ruling, so that the government can then proceed to leave the EU.
It's a fucking weird argument. I don't think it'd work, but some law professors say otherwise. If the supreme court justices are feeling really fucking technical that day, maybe it'll pass.
