Destruction of property doesn't make it illegitimate, it does make it violent but mainly the destruction has to be related to the protest. Looting a pharmacy because a cop did something isn't legitimate.

This. The rights that the oligarchy of the colonies were claiming didn't apply to them because it was outside of England. Tons of laws and taxes that were applied in Britain at the time weren't applied in the Atlantic colonies. In addition, the duties were very small compared to those levied on tea back in the UK.
