So I wasn't around when this dropped and I'm yet to watch it.
What did you all think? Did it live up to the near-two-decades of waiting and hype? After seeing it, do you want a new series?

Better than Samurai Jack's finale by 100 miles.
Really don't want a new series seeing the movie was the perfect ending to the series.
Watch it. It's pretty good all things considered. It isn't amazing but then I don't think after fifteen years that could have been the case. If you watch the series prior to watching it though you will seriously appreciate it.
>After seeing it, do you want a new series
Yes, but I doubt we'll get one.
kind of a dumb comparison since hey arnold was just a very competent entry to a common genre whereas samurai jack was a pretty damn unusual premise for western animation
The movie was fun and as a fan of the original show, the Jungle Movie was refreshing and made it worthwhile. The animation was a little jarring(the bright colors really stood out from the watercolor backgrounds of old), but overall the movie exceeded expectations.
>do you want a new series?
Maybe, maybe not. If they have the original writing team and work their assess off in creating the show to reflect modern times but keep the characters down to earth and make them keep their personalities, then I'm all for a new season.
It was a great series finale and I can't believe it actually got fucking made. Probably the only off putting thing about the Jungle Movie was the "time skip" (I'm using that term very loosely) where suddenly Rhonda has a smartphone and Big Bob's Beepers is basically dead. That stuff is minor though.
And no, I don't want Hey Arnold revived, I am satisfied with the ending.
>both series had a huge following
>both series ended without closure
>both series got a long-awaited finale
How is this not comparable? Genres aside it's perfectly fine to compare them as series closures
Why was it better? I thought SJ was decent, but really missing some shit. And there's the whole issue with Ashi and that ending, but whatevs. It was very well animated, well choreographed, and the sound effects and music were top notch.
Seriously though, The Jungle Movie was way better than Jack's ending
The Jungle Movie felt like a competent finale to tie up loose strings.
SJ was rushed and literally Gurren Lagann.
>hey arnold was just a very competent entry to a common genre
When was the last real slice of life cartoon? 15 years ago?
Clarence.
Bob's Burgers, Loud House, Clarence, a couple new shows popping up here and there
If you want to stretch it, there are plenty of SoLs with fantastic settings
How was Helga's voice? I was very unsure in the trailer
Also why do they all have tits and hips now? They're only 10.
Fair enough. It is hardly common though.
>How was Helga's voice?
Considering the VA is in her 30s, not too bad. She doesn't sound very different from the final few episodes of the series itself back in 2002.
>Also why do they all have tits and hips now? They're only 10.
Some girls bloom early. This is known.
Yeah but literally every girl? What the fuck are they putting in the Hillwood water supply?
>What the fuck are they putting in the Hillwood water supply?
Well the creator is a waifufag. So i'd just go with diluted autism.
Bartlett is a confirmed Sup Forumsmrade
...
children's television in general is on life support user, not sure why you're bringing up the present in this context, i'm talking about the spread of programming at the time when hey arnold and samurai jack were airing
I feel like Bartlett became disinterested in Arnold and Helga. It just feels so flat, considering that was the biggest draw to TJM.
>I feel like Bartlett became disinterested in Arnold and Helga. It just feels so flat, considering that was the biggest draw to TJM.
I think it suffers the most from the 15 year gap since the series. They basically have to be reintroduced to the audience, instead of the movie leading on directly from the Journal and the Movie.
It didn't help that Arnold felt a lot younger, even though he's supposed to be two years older. I wonder if the non-confession was in the original script.
>I wonder if the non-confession was in the original script.
I think the idea of the two of them meeting up on the crow's nest was always there, though it might have been different originally. He comes across as a dense motherfucker, even by his normal standards though.
I see the kiss as more of a non-confession. If you look at how he acted with his other crushes (Ruth, Lila, dream!Helga) he was a lot more forward and here it just seems like his VA was too embarrassed by the script.
It was good, but then again I wasn't ever really hyped for it. A new series would kinda be a bit overkill, I feel like the movie was a great ending to the series as a whole. Maybe something else by the same creator, though.
Yeah, it was definitely the gap. It made me sad because the movie is definitely canon but it just doesn't vibe well what the series had going for it and doesn't feel real.
Also, I didn't feel like Arnold's interest in Helga was ever built up. Like yeah there was very minor flirting in the show but it would have been nice for Arnold to feel conflicted about his feelings for her and feeling like he's finally the one that needs help and talks to Gerald or grandpa about it.
I'm still so grateful we got the movie but I would def be on board with a series if it was done right.
>Why was it better?
Hey Arnold's finale embraced its shows central theme, Samurai Jack's didn't.
Samurai Jack's central arc is Jack's personal journey to grieve the loss of his family and people, overcome his survivor's guilty and forgive himself for not being their to stop Aku in The Past, and ultimately learning to find hope and a new life to fight for in The Future. We see the show follow through with this theme for the majority of the final season, only to drop the ball in the finale. Despite the lyrics of the opening theme, Jack succeeding in returning to The Past is antithetical to the show's themes, so seeing Jack return to The Past and wipe Ashi, the Scotsman, and everyone he's ever met and helped from existence in the finale leaves a bad taste in your mouth because it doesn't jive with the rest of the series.
Hey Arnold is, at its core, a slice of life show about friends and family trying their best to be good people and be decent to one another. The larger arc of Arnold's parents and their disappearance compliments this central theme because we see Arnold fill the void left by their absence with the friendships and surrogate family he builds for himself. Seeing Arnold reunited with his real family is, thus, a cathartic resolution for his character arc.
>here it just seems like his VA was too embarrassed by the script.
Well that's probably part of it, but I got more out of the scene that you did. I see it more as a dawning realisation on Arnold's part, that true love isn't about having puppy love feelings for someone, it's about doing everything you can to protect them and make them happy. The writing makes it come across like he's just giving her a mere gratitude kiss, but I don't think that's really the intention.
Compare the kiss, to say, the tango scene from April Fools. He doesn't feel very Arnold like to me. He's like a younger alternate reality Arnold.
>He doesn't feel very Arnold like to me
Is that tango scene not the one where Arnold acts out of character? Arnold... flirting..
>He's like a younger alternate reality Arnold.
To be fair he kind of comes across like that throughout the entire movie. I just think the child actor wasn't particularly good, since they apparently had to change the script to reflect his spaghetti dropping in the romance scenes.
I really did genuinely think Jack would be faced with the choice to go back and kill Aku or simply kill him in the future. He would have at first wante to go back to the past, but Aku tricks him again, resulting in Jack breaking down and giving up completely, surrounded by pure darkness as Aku wins. When this happens the spirit of the Scotsman brings him back to the light and it makes Jack realise that the future is full of good people doing their best and Jack understands he doesn't have the right to erase these people. Then he kills Aku and lives happily ever after with a final scene Jack/Ashi kid shown running through a maize field, spotting a blue dog girl. They stare at each other and she smiles at him then disappears into the maize, and the kid runs after her. The camera pants up and we see Aku's dark city recolored in shimmering gold, surrounded by a blue sky and framed by wispy clouds. WACHA.
>you will never live in the timeline where this was the true ending to SJ
He emoted well enough when he needed to but it's a shame he couldn't man the fuck up when it came to expressing his love to Helga.
>that music then the cure is released and the adults start to wake up
Holy fuck that was some gorgeous noise
He acts more like S1 Arnold there. If you remember the first few episodes, Arnold wasn't above pranking others (such as joining the other guys to scare all the girls during Rhonda's slumber party) and trying to get back to people who did him wrong, although he would never truly try to get "even" but rather see if there was a way to defuse a situation in a way that hopefully scared off his bully/opponent. Case in point: in the original pilot episode, Arnold decided to put up a show and act like a crazy person to convince Harold it probably wasn't a good idea to beat him up. I actually enjoyed seeing Arnold having some edge given back to him after several seasons of him being an altruist (while the show was slowly but surely shifting focus on Helga, who at this point was a much more interesting character).
The tango scene is literally Arnold getting back at Helga after getting pranked all day (and putting up with Helga's behaviour for five seasons). It also needs to be taken into account that this episode takes place after the movie, so he was already aware of Helga's feelings towards him; I always took that as a sign that justifies his flirtatious behaviour as he knows Helga is deep down enjoying the attention even if she feels it to be embarrassing in a public setting.
Arnold is probably enjoying it himself, even if he pretends he isn't and pretends he doesn't know why.
The movie is a little mixed with their relationship: in a few early scenes we see Arnold and Gerald smirking to each other when they see Helga verbally stumbling to hide her feelings. It's obvious they both know why. But then Arnold becomes suddenly retarded in the crows nest and doesn't know what's going on. I mean even in the show Arnold, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not, hints a few times he has feelings for her (and probably has had them for a while) but it's clear he isn't quite ready to reveal them.
Craig confirmed a while ago that Arnold was flirting with Helga because he knows how she feels at that point. It's canonically after the first movie.
>Hey Arnold gets a movie to conclude it
>Samurai Jack gets a final season to conclude it
>Invader Zim is getting a movie to conclude it
What next Sup Forums?
Azula gets a spin-off movie
>Invader Zim
No, please no. Sup Forums can't go back to those days. Please!
Arnold flirts with Ruth, Lila, Summer, and Hilda.
>>What next Sup Forums?
Galactic KND
Oh fuck now I remember that site and the codes and shit
Jenny Bravo but she hates men
it wasn't great but wasn't terrible either
it felt rushed but at the same time felt like it didn't have much meat
the humour was bad
arnold meeting with his parents felt empty
but glad arnold has his parents now
Also remember that unlike Jack, Arnold actually got the girl with he and Helga's romance actually having been built up over the course of the series instead of rushed to hell and back.
Also it didn't poorly rip-off an anime that came out after the series originally ended for it's finale.
>this episode takes place after the movie
didnt the movie come out after the show ended?
I still think Arnold knew that was Helga the whole time.
No, Arnold is too retarded for that
Sym-Bionic Titan
>triple dubs
it is written
i want this
well said
He had to have.
Arnold was generally pretty clever and exceedingly polite
You sound like a corporate bot.
