It's about the origins of Santa Claus. Looks fucking lovely. Will it have any effect on the animation industry? Or is this just another one of 2D traditional animation's final death throes?

here is a functioning link and a loli
I wish I could permaban all pedos furever.
I haven't seen 2D traditional animation of this calibre for a long time. The characters' and its expressive designs, the flow of their movement, the well-delivered physical comedy, the color pallet, everything screams post-Renaissance era Disney.
I feel bad that this type of animation had to go. I missed this.
fyi, this is actually not entirely 2D.
It's entire purpose is to shake up the animation industry and achieve what Disney has been trying to do since Paperman.
seamlessly blend 2D and 3D animation techniques
though they are doing it the opposite of disney.
Disney tried to make 3D look 2D with special shaders.
these guys are using traditional 2D animation, but using digital CG shaders and what seems like 3D environments/props to make it so you can never quite tell if it's actually really detailed digital 2D, or really 2D looking 3D

this looks cool but damn it's probably gonna bankrupt netflix, it feels like they're on a slow decline.
the reason the animation feels so familiar is because it's headed by the guy who designed Dr Doppler in treasure planet.
Also looking at this guy's resume, he was fairly involved IN renaissance Disney, working as character designer or animator on movies like A Goofy Movie, Hunchback, Hercules, and Tarzan.
Also, he's the creator of the Despicable Me franchise. And thinking about it, it shows. You can see a lot of his animation quirks in characters like Gru, despite the transition to 3D hiding them a bit
interesting but i dont get the point of making 2d look like 3d
I still hold Despicable Me as a fantastic movie lost in the cancer that is the resultant Minions craze.
probably something about how the 2D part makes it look and feel more heartfelt and the 3D part makes it pretty
i'm not the only one, right?
same designer
see
the guy making Klaus is the guy who designed doppler
Because that isn't the point. The idea is to blend the 2 into something new.
where do you think we are
>it's headed by the guy who designed Dr Doppler in treasure planet.
Not that user, but I loved the design and animation of Doppler in that movie, so that's cool as fug.
are they making a Klaus movie?
It makes 2D more palletable in a post Pixar world.
>Netflix produced
since when?
according to google, november
not that Klaus, but still santa claus
They’re already in debt in the billions we’ll just have to enjoy these over budgeted movies while it lasts
if only they didn't ruin it with that terrible 3d mimicry
You really think that's a small minority of people on Sup Forums?
Well, you are still not in prison.
>Enjoying fiction is deserving of jail time.
Thoughtcrime anyone?
>Netflix produced
Into the trash it goes
I don't know if it's the sound mixing, the lip animation, or an expectation for him to sound like Dr. Doppler, but something about the voice isn't quite matching up with the footage. Anyone else get what I'm saying?
nope.
The animation looks nice, but the premise doesn't interest me.
>if i call it a thoughtcrime that means it isn;t disgusting
Next you're going to tell me drugs are a victimless crime.
I choose to believe that this is canon with Arthur Christmas.
They;re not, their userbase is still massively expanding along with revenue.
It's not unusual to have debt, most of their "debt" is content obligations, as in, the money they plan to spend over 5 years producing original content. and their revenue is above expectations. Their service is expanding quickly overseas and within the US.
And this is not to mention that Netflix isn't alone in creating quality content, other streaming services are expanding their libraries of original animation with content that looks promising.
I really want this succeed, it has been a while since i saw this level of animation a feature film, and it seems like it could be a fun movie.
they are
Calm down, Tumblr.
Same.
cool, but it want restart popularity of 2d in the mainstream.
This scene is very tiring to watch. He is too spastic.
...
but kids love spastic characters! just look at modern cartoon characters!
I don't particularly like how they make the eyes glossy.
i wonder how they do the lighting. nice bit of subsurface scattering in the ears.
Consumtion, yes. Mass production and distribution, no
what are those numbers off to the side for?
Much better way to do it than Paperman. Adding CG to a hand-drawn base works a lot better than adding hand-drawn to a CG base.
>2d with 3d lighting
I like it.
The resemblance is uncanny
I remember seeing threads about it when the teaser came out, been keeping an eye on it a little every now and then to see if any progress has been made. Glad to hear the project is still alive, it looks really promising.
Anons mentioned it already
It's weird, I've seen Klaus clips before and I somehow never noticed the resemblance. But now after people pointed it out, I can't stop seeing it.
Netflix is also releasing this:
