Cartoons are going to keep heading in a cheaper direction. That much is certain.
But why does it seem like no one can do something minimalist/cheap yet still visually very good?

OTGW did an amazing job with it. Very simplistic character designs while putting all the detail in the scenery.
That said I wouldn’t like all the shows to look like OTGW, my main problem with western animation is the lack of variety now in days. I really fucking wish that mainstream audiences would put a bit more attention a respect into western animation so we could get a higher budget. I wish we wouldn’t rely on Korean outsourcing and drop 2D films for 3D.
It feels like we were taken out of the road in the middle of the ride. We could’ve still built up from the foundations of the golden age, there was still lots of directions we can go. This timeline could’ve gone a whole lot better.
And now it looks like the animation industry is trying to grow, but corporate shit is stopping it from getting foward. And now we have a misinformed generation of aspiring animators accepting the style of today’s shows as the norm and are not really trying to break any boundaries.
I think the best outcome for the next generation of new creators and shows that they will absorb all the good things of today’s show (SU, GF, Star, SJ) like attempting a plot and a developing characters, improve on it and learn from mistakes.
wakfu was made in flash.

Because the runners either hire their inexperienced tard friends or are just lazy abd trying to ripoff AT's boring artstyle.
Steven Universe is visually very pretty when everything is on model and the animation isn't sloppy. The backgrounds are beautiful.
I just wish the show was more faithful to how Rebecca draws the characters. I don’t have a pic, but I found a bunch of drawings of Aquamarine it looked quite nice.
Because you faggots are entitled babies who don't deserve quality content.
why so many SU OPs all of a sudden?
I get you. While her artstyle is very unique and expressive, some of her storyboarders are very lazy and inexperienced when it comes to both writing and drawing. If there were a bunch of Rebecca Sugars working in their place it'd probably be a lot better.
it br ings all the (you)s to the yard.
and damn right its better than (you)rs
>like attempting a plot and a developing characters, improve on it and learn from mistakes.
This is literally the only reason i lurk on SU discussion threads.
No one cares is why.
I think this is the main reason. Americans just don't care about animation anymore
I swear, if in-house animators were still a thing in US tv animation, it’d be over for the nips
The worst part of it all is the Koreans are usually MORE expensive due to mix ups and layout fixes caused the the overseas supervisor being completely incompetent. Not to mention they barely got their workflow turned from paper to digital about a year or two ago. When even less money could've gone to a good American studio that would've arguably done a better job due to their actual TRAINING and Experience.
You need to watch much lower-end movies to really understand cost-cutting measures, especially weird, one-off things by independent studios, typically animated in countries like Thailand or the Philippines. There are some nice backgrounds in things like Lionelville, for example, or Planes 2.
Not to be racist, there are actually good Korean studios that can do better ham American studios, but another part of the problem is the language barrier and that's why the production companies have to pay more money for the overseas supervisor.
I think even if SU finishes underwhelmingly, like Craig said, that show cut through a path for many upcoming plot-centric shows. Something good came out in the end. Better shows inspired by SU will rise hopefully. It’s a bit heartwarming to think that way.
Keeping costs down is half the reason for innovations in animation. Hell, the cel was a cost-saving step relative to literally drawing everything in the frame from scratch on a separate piece of paper. Making it pretty requires talent and skill, which are rare even among artists.
one of the reasons something minimalist and/or cheap with good visual style doesn't happen:
it takes skill to pull off.
it seems like a lot of the people that are getting into these positions just don't have the technical skill to make something that looks good. there are sometimes a few on the crew that can, but the rest are dragging them down
Original ppg was a good example of minimalist/ high skill ceiling done well
I, too, want to fuck the Dorito, OP.
most competent animators and directors are working in 3D because there is still much more to learn and explore in that art form. 2D has peaked as far as cost efficiency is concerned
American animation needs fewer words, more actions. And those actions need to be defined. Strong poses, with half the frames if need be.
Hire talented artists, and leave writing to the writers who don't have "Made a webcomic about someone with fire powers" as their portfolio.
But that's all obvious. We can't help who the current CalArts family are, we can only hold out that the upcoming generation really cares.
>the current CalArts family
please name these calarts boogeymen
