Welcome To The Wayne: Season 1 Finale Talkback!

Welcome To The Wayne is a show about neat-freak Ansi Molina who's roped into zany adventures with best-friend Olly Timbers and precocious leader Saraline Timbers. They're involved in strange happenings like NotLego™ mechs and nose infestations that seem to crop up in the Wayne, a not-so-average NYC hotel.

>So This is Glamsterdam
With the Spy close to opening the Gates of Glamsterdam, Team Timbers prepares for an all out battle for the Wayne.

Nick is cruel, so they're airing off Season 1B across Europe who-knows-how-long before they get to the U.S. - here's a drive of all the new episodes so far:

Got it? Good! Grab your training wheels and polish your spoons because the season finale's coming out today! (around 4:30 PM, EST) Ooh, I wonder what'll happen with Julia, or if the Spy's gonna rule the world?! How will Andrei deal with his past? Hype!

A little early for a thread, don't you think?

That wttw synopsis sounds suspiciously like a cartoon version of The Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

Will dump some art while we wait.

Hype does that.

I tried not to get too much into the overarching plot but yes, both of these shows have hotel shenanigans. I dunno how much fantasy creatures and such Suite Life has though.

Suite Life plus Gravity Falls then?

Closer. I like that Team Timbers expanded to a gang of eight as it gives the crew a nice sense of camaraderie. Also, it feels more like a "kids only" kind of show with the WPs only being visible for particular kids (though I think some adults like Jonah might be able to see them too) so I might add a little bit of KND in the mix. Also, you'd be remiss not to add a little ATHF too.

>Timbers
This screams GF ripoff if i ever saw one. Also doesnt help that its painfully unfunny and focuses too much on trying to shoce mystery instead of focusing on the story first.

I think this is the stupidest complaint you can come up with. You could've claimed it was a ripoff because it's also an overarching mystery with a pair of introverted/extroverted siblings but instead you chose something as arbitrary as a name.

That being said, I think this show is hilarious and actually does a great job at combining the self-contained plot and overarching mystery which is honestly pretty laid-back. It has its weaker moments sometimes (like in the recent nose episode when Saraline just randomly exposits Andrei's been gone for weeks even though his absence was never "felt" - characters should be going around saying "Where's Andrei?") but it strikes a good balance.

Huh looks pretty cool, anyone have links to the first half of the season?

Just a little bump while I'm setting up.

Okay then:

>I think this show is hilarious
Its not though. And how is literally stealing the name of the main characters from the show you are ripping off a stupid complaint?

What's the airdate of Nate is Late on UK? Not yet?

Yes!! Thanks

Because you didn't back up your claim at all. You didn't explain why you thought it was a ripoff, just that the names of characters from each show are both related to trees. This is barely relevant to either show at all. In GF's case, Dipper's symbolized as the "Pine Tree" so that's a little relevant but it has nothing to do with WTTW at all. The Timbers' last name could be substituted with "Lebowski" and it would have no impact whatsoever.

And I know there's a 99% chance you came from that YouTube video, so if you're gonna just repeat that then don't bother.

>alright, who let him have two edibles?

This was quality. Weirdly awesome and satisfying to see Ansi go badass and mow down soldiers and stab a monster in the goddamn eyes. I have a feeling S2 will make S1 look like small potatoes in its grand scale
>”Nobody breaks up with me over text!”
>You’ve been born before, right?” before squeezing through a tiny hole
>”If this lasts for more than 4 hours, I’m calling a doctor”
>”I’m not going anywhere buddy.” “I know, I know.”
I don’t feel like Julia’s past actions were quite properly explained, I know she said that she kept secrets because “they needed to discover it for themselves” but like, why? Did she know that the Spy getting the key was the way to assemble the Gyre? If so, that makes sense, but they should have said as such.
I thought the same of Ms. Clara’s arc but after thinking it through her thing actually did make perfect sense.

That announcement was only made a few days ago and I see no evidence of the show airing over here yet.

Kek, when did this get drawn?

Decided to binge all the Julia episodes to see what stuck out.

>Like A Happy, Happy Bird
Julia intentionally hung out with Ansi, knowing of his importance to the plot. She considers joining Team Timbers, but is reluctant. Perhaps she doesn't want her role as WP-taker-carer-ofer to be compromised. They probably aren't her cup of tea. Also, Olly's suspicions are quickly established and the whole "jealousy" front is set up too. It seems like Mimsy was trying to steal Ansi's card - maybe Julia wanted it for whatever reason? Also, she reasonably freaks out when Mimsy doesn't take his "medicine" (beam) - knowing about the transformation. Also, the way she rubs her eyes before and after going goomballs looks like she's putting on/taking off contacts, which was a nice subtle touch.

>Like No Other Market On Earth
She does some kind of internet vlog. When it seemed like she was in cahoots with the Spy I thought she purposely had the shape-shifter as the cameraman but now I'm not so sure. I had her pegged as the vegan type, so having her do burger stuff was a little weird. She's probably aware Ansi's mad crushing on her, and finds it more annoying than anything but it gives her a link to him. It's pretty obvious from "Happy Happy Bird" that he tells her everything.

>Beeping the Binklemobile
She takes care of a hamster and likes Gleeco.

>Spacefish!
She babysits too, which makes sense since taking care of Wendell's basically the same thing as taking care of a guinea pig. She's apparently pretty good.

>Swap Shop Hop and Bop
She temporarily buys a calliope and leads Ansi on a little bit.

>Leave the Funny, Find the Bunny
Her talent is dancing with a dog, apparently. Obviously, she tried to get Ansi and Olly to do magic with the bunny - possibly attempting to make them disappear? Maybe she wanted to get Hopper to return to Hatlanta and knew they'd be the people for the job.

That was fun.

Wish the show would have higher stakes and have serious moments without the mood being lightened so quickly, but I doubt that'll change. Still looking forward to next season though.

I like the balance they struck between having Julia do regular kid things with Ansi and tying her into the mystery plot.

>Calliope
I thought I heard that somewhere on the show before. Didn’t the Spy call herself a “Calliope agent” to her boss?

Cool observations.
She's still a bit of a mystery but it's impressive how two episodes made her characterization in the previous 18 so much more interesting than just "ditzy qt girl to be the object for which Ansi's spaghetti drops"
She clearly has some innate talent with communicating with/training WPs and that skill will be folded into the Gyre next season

Carl?

If you watch the show you will instantly understand

Yeah, I just noticed that too. I doubt it's a coincidence, so that might imply Ansi's mom has some connection to the Spy (I doubt she literally IS the Spy but that'd sure be a twist).

The only other things we know about her is where she lives (I like that it's pretty much the polar opposite of NYC), that she writes to Ansi weekly, and that she has healing crystals. Also, Alfred seems okay with Ansi visiting her - probably one of the more positive portrayals of divorcees in any media.

Ok.

I'm not gonna get caught all the way up today (just found this show, I'm on like episode 6 right now) but I dearly appreciate the links. Even kimcartoon doesn't have past episode 9.

I hope wttw gets more attention and a schedule that makes sense maybe, cause I'm really really enjoying it, just a damn fun time with good writing.

Ansi’s mom being the spy wouldn’t make any sense as he would recognize her unless she’s a shapeshifter but that would be absolutely insane and be some serious drama

>probably one of the more positive portrayals of divorcees in any media
Yeah, I remember you mentioning that in another thread, and it’s nice!

I also doubt the Spy is Ansi’s mom, but she could have easily done research for the organization or something like that.

Speaking of moms, we still need to know why Andrei recognized the lullaby Olly’s mom used to sing to him.
Mrs. Timbers jokes to Andrei in Hit It Toofus that she works for the government and “there’s plenty of pictures of him.” Seems possible that Mrs. Timbers researched Andrei’s “beam sickness” for the Gyre, and might have sung to him while he was in suspended animation.

Oh, speaking of the rainbow gas being called “beam,” when will the kids notice that their communicators are called “BeamStars”!?

Has it been confirmed for a second season?

>Dormammu I’ve come to bargain

Yes, Billy said 20 episodes on the Nickelodeon Animation Podcast

Oh good, I was worried that since I'd not heard a damn thing about this show before last month that it might be doing too poorly to get renewed.

>You see this Packrat is a bad mother-

It is more of a minor problem, my main problem is how its simply not funny.
>And I know there's a 99% chance you came from that YouTube video
Absolutely no idea what youre talking about friend

I feel like they renewed it before it aired, since they cooled off on airing it so suddenly.

They did, as the podcast was recorded right before it aired.
The show didn’t get great ratings but it did improve from the premiere, and they were nowhere near awful, still higher than practically anything that airs on CN. It’s absolutely moronic that Nick is so fickle and quick on the trigger, it took Spongebob a whole season to be a hit, it took Breaking Bad four.
I want to hold out hope, but with how long it’s been on hiatus with all the S1 episodes in the can I really wouldn’t be shocked if it gets dumped on Nicktoons

It would imply Ansi's father fucked a shapeshifter

You know humor is subjective right dude?

Decided to sneak to Reddit for some of the coded messages. Sadly, the bomb format and lack of popularity overall killed any chance of speculating over them, but it's worth looking back at anyway.

>Sleepyhead
ASSEMBLE THE GYRE
>Happy Bird
DONT TRUST MOLINA
>Mail Those Cards
VAMPIRES GO HOME
>Wassome
BBEME BBEARING WALL
>Beekeeper
JONAH AND HARVEY '79
>No Other Market
BEME REGULATION SYSTEM
>Binklemobile
NON-RESONANT CALL ISTHA-TECH SUPPORT
>Spacefish
CONDUCTOR ASSEMBLY REQUIRED
>Normas
J, UNDER THE DRAIN

A lot of these are kind of nonsensical and might make more sense in-context but the namedrop of Harvey as one of Jonah's associates is pretty big. Also, there's apparently multiple cyphers which makes my head hurt. I might look into some of the newer episodes and try to decode stuff there but it's not a priority.

that’skindahot.jpg

>DONT TRUST MOLINA
Curious.

>the namedrop of Harvey as one of Jonah's associates is pretty big

I’ve been meaning to say, in Gimble in the Wabe Mr. Timbers gives the kids some pretty specific clues about the Gyre.
The parents think Wayne Phenomena is all pretend in Hit It Toofus, but if they knew what was going on, surely they would know the advantage of playing dumb in front of the Spy.

I like this kid. I expected him to be too "comic relief: the character" for me but I wound up really enjoying him instead

I mean, he kind of is that but in a fun, quippy way rather than a lolsorandom way. It helps that his jokes are actually funny and quick enough so they don't drag the plot down.

We don’t know why Ansi’s dad moved into the Wayne, and we just found out that Ansi got a calliope from his mom and the Spy calls herself a “Calliope agent.”

And since one of the other graffitis is dated 1979, “DON’T TRUST MOLINA” is probably not about Ansi

The magic of balance
This show is mainly a comedy but it also keeps a tight handle on its story has any serialized kids show in recent memory had so much motion in its plot in such a short span of time? It’s damn masterful

SHUT YO MOUTH

such a sweet boy

I do love me a good nervous boy. I appreciate that none of the main characters go too overboard with their archetypes.

Yep, the characters are strongly defined but they always have something to balance them out. Everybody’s pretty enjoyable.
Ansi gets special mention because I always adore that kind of character though. Just so very cute

I like this show but I really wish their noses looked like literally anything else. they're awful.

Just finished marathoning. Is it strange that I've enjoyed this more than the other big, popular cartoons at the moment (with the exception of Trollhunters)? I mean, it's good though not fantastic, but it feels pretty consistent in its quality. I feel like I've been missing that lately.

I was fully prepared to hate this character, but but I warmed up to him pretty quickly. A good half of the laughs I got involved him in some way.

I think it makes sense. This show definitely has a centralized thrust in its writing, it feels like someone’s in control; a lot of these serialized shows nowadays leave things up to the boarders, which has consistently led to very fractured storytelling. Works great for something like OK KO or Spongebob or Harvey Beaks, but having actual writers at the helm of storytelling for a more plot-driven show seems to lead to better results.

Yeah, I think it helps that he's very good-natured, the quips are fast and offhand, don't derail the plot, and the fact that yeah, overall he's actually pretty funny.

I overall love the humor in this show, and even for the jokes that don't land for me, I KNOW I would have thought they were the absolute funniest shit when I was 11 or so, so I still consider them successful.

I think a majority of the cultural references are things 11-year-olds wouldn’t get, so that’s also something to factor in. This show does seem to be trying its darndest to please everyone, it’s a shame it’s mostly been ignored.

it's more reliably FUN than any show I've seen in ages, I've been using it as a wonderful palate cleanser in between trying out the mostly-shitty anime on my "to-watch" list. It's just such a consistent damn delight.

I still wanna know what the deal is with this guy.

>Oglethorpe's reincarnation
>has an eye for rare things
>has the balls to stand up to The Packrat
>literally mentions the whole lock/key thing so he's probably aware of what he sold
>seems more interested in giving people what they need than getting wealthy
>knows who Ansi is, shuffles away suspiciously with a music sting

He might show up again but he's basically just a merchant who tries to sell people what they need. The calliope Ansi gave him might turn up later. How he got the key is anyone's guess but he was looking for it.

He’s definitely advancing the story, but we’ll see whether he has an important role in it besides handling important plot devices.

This is why Ansi/Olly is the superior ship

Nah. It has similar base elements to GF, but has a much different tone and goes in an entirely different direction - as the show goes on, they're increasingly unalike. That said, it's clear Lopez is a Gravity Falls fanboy. I keep seeing what seems to be little references here and there - "Timbers", the mind eraser, the clown that takes a form similar to one the shapeshifter did, and I'm half convinced this was a reason Judd Hirsch had a cameo. It's a love letter, not a ripoff. Whether this kind of nerdom is a turnoff probably depends on the individual, but I never got the feeling WTTW is trying to ride off of someone's coattails. And frankly, some minor flaws aside, I'm quite happy with what it is.

Yes, and also Olly obviously has some kind of crush on Ansi. Too bad there's almost no ship art

Best hetero ship

It's almost like it's by design.

I'm hoping once the season finale airs here it will drum up interest (and with that, more art). After all, Star vs didn't really hit it's stride until late in S1.

Star’s empire was built on waifus and porn, don’t think we’ll be courting that audience anytime soon

The show already has porn, my dude.

>a whole season is out
>less than 10 pics
not exactly overflowing with riches
Star probably had more before it aired

Ok, I'm glad it wasn't just me seeing that. I don't think I've ever seen boys ship-teased this hard outside of a particular subset of anime.

It's pretty impossible to ignore desu
Dade from Harvey Beaks was EXTREMELY implied to have a crush on Harvey but in that case he was kind of a self-righteous creep due to constantly internally battling his religious upbringing and jealousy. Harvey likes him as a friend (he "likes everyone!") but was oblivious to Dade's romantic advances due to just being a naive little ball of pureness, only as an end stinger to single episode is he ever implied to posses any awareness of romantic feelings (and it's towards a girl), which meant the whole scenario is pretty one-sided.
Olly is in contrast a very positive character and Ansi seems aware of how unusually strong his displays of affection are, but due to his own neurotic aversion to touching and general nervousness brushes them off throughout the season, though towards the end he seems more and more comfortable with it.
Overall the show definitely is either making it clear that Olly has a thing for Ansi or playing that implication for laughs, it is not in shippers' heads this time.
I wonder if they'll just let Olly continue his silent suffering (that we got a big hint of when he frowned and hung his head in sadness after Ansi says he'd marry Julia if City Hall didn't say he couldn't until he was 18) or if they're going to have somehow deal with Ansi letting him down gently if/when he and Julia become an official thing, though probably in coded language about friendship obviously. Though hell, if they're going to Nicktoons what do they got to lose by making the gay completely out in the open

What floored me was that moment in “Flutch” when Olly tells Ansi he treasures “our level of intimacy,” and Ansi says, “Find another way to say that.”

Dont use the excuse TTG and marvel fags who like quips use, jesus christ

Today Was Wassome had some doozies
>"I'll stay here with him, somebody's gotta stroke his hair!"
>"What does he need, support? Hugs? Light platonic nuzzling?"
>"Olly says my eyes sparkle like diamonds!"

Nick has been pushing diversity and homo stuff more, so it's a bit hard to tell if Olly's obsession is strictly played for laughs. Especially with Olly admitting to Julia that they're in a "like triangle" with Ansi.

It's still a kid's show, so I'm leaning towards that nothing actually homo will come from it.

I'm confused. I don't remember the last time my DVR recorded this show. Have I missed a bunch, potentially?

They haven't announced airdates for the US, but in the UK they aired the last 11 episodes of the 20 episode season over the last 2.5 weeks. Luckily Retal recorded them

It is better than Gravity Falls

Eh, stopped clock right twice a day, etc. I don't care for TTG or cape stuff myself but I'm not so far gone that I'm gonna begrudge other people harmlessly enjoying something just because I don't also enjoy it.

It must be fun running the official WTTW Instagram account.
>"Hey, can we post stuff the goes past episode 9 yet?...oh, okay."

At least the animation team seems to still be in production and in a position to mock up a quick picture like that.
As I doubt they queued up an Olympics promo months in advance or anything, nobody gave a shit or hyped it up this year

I don't think I can say that I think WTTW is better than GF, but I sure do like Olly more than Mabel. No contest.

Expressions need to be swapped.

Just finished the last of them today. Here's hoping they can keep this up next season.

It'll be interesting to see what direction it'll go. I'm so used to shows dragging out a particular plot or conflict that I was a little taken by surprise at how the season finale concluded. All we know for sure is that the Bigger Bad will be showing up on location, presumably with a more threatening plan. I hope we also get more backstory on the Wayne, and the characters who have a history with it.
