Taking away negative reinforcement to work is still lowering motivation to work. Negative reinforcement may be uncomfortable, but it's definitely motivating for most people.

Start with budgetary calculations.

Basic income is much much better then any ther wellfare system, because it encourages work the MOST. Wuth basic income every job you take is a bonus. If u live on foodstamps (usa) or just other handouts (like in most of europe) and you want to take a small job you lose the foosstamps or the benefits and suddenly ypu are worse off or just about the same, but now you have to work for it and less free time.
With basic income every bit of money earned makes you richer and better off, so its very moticating even to take small jobs at first. Just domt make it too high. It should cover a tiny minimal appartment and enough money for food, so you dont starve.

coming up with a total figure, dividing it by the number of people below a certain income or progressively distributing it based on means testing, and distributing that amount.

The condition would be this: eliminate HUD, WIC, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, CHIP, TANF etc.

Converting various forms of welfare to a cash payout not only makes them more efficient, and gives the payees more choice, but it would serve as an observational experiment that would allow us to see if this program could be expanded to full UBI.

Generally work fulfills all those other needs as well, assuming you have a good job. A job gives you skills, a sense of fulfillment, a way to meet people, and it helps the community as a whole. Only in a shitty dead-end job does that not apply, so the answer is to automate the less desirable jobs and open up new jobs have room for advancement. Easier said than done of course.

I knew a guy who believed in "community" as a motivating force for work. But it really was two freaks, also a foreigner who had an official position which he simply liked having.

So, this guy who preached of community identified as a naturalized french canadian - right there you got a cornerstone of being a loon. And so quebecuck got in people's faces, trying to push everyone into believing in this thing where people worked without reason, casually assuming that everybody had no other concerns, the way he didn't. He did this largely because he felt in montreal people would just randomly do things because they were ostensibly neat, and he was determined to bring a dose of the way of montreal to small minded, stuffy Toronto.

The other guy, the foreigner, didn't think so much, he just enjoyed hiding behind quebecucks ideology. I had a discussion with some members of my family about guaranteed minimum income. They strongly opposed at first because they feared moochers would just take advantage of it like they do with SSI, SNAP, Medicaid and public housing. A perfectly reasonable position. What they didn't know was that GMI would replace all other welfare programs and have people in those programs fend for themselves. After they learned this they completely jumped on board.

Basically GMI would only affect the people who already receive welfare and people who are willing to be on welfare.

Maybe I'll bring up basic income next time. I don't know how I'll make them buy it if I don't fully buy it myself.

My advice is to talk to your family and friends about this stuff. It's pretty interesting if there is anyone who wants to have a conversation. The point is not to agree but to get everyone's viewpoints on topics instead of letting them remain locked in a thread. For example I learned that not everyone knew what GMI was and that some people are very willing to get rid of the established welfare programs.
