Would you ever commission a piece of art?

Would you ever commission a piece of art?
How big of a picture or how much would you be willing to spend?
How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?

150$ was the most I payed. It's ok, I make a lot of money and my gf is not a leach (bless her heart, I love that woman).

I've commissioned two whole comics starring my webcomic waifus that specifically cater to my time stop fetish. Ended up paying about $900 for the first and $650 for the second. I plan to commission more.

As for how I would even decide; I'd only commission an artist based on their price per page/drawing, and only if I like their artstyle. I've thought about contacting Incase, but I sincerely doubt his prices are around what I'm willing to spend.

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?
in a heartbeat if I had the disposable income. a personal piece by artgerm would be fucking incredible.

I've only gotten into it recently but yeah, commissioning is cool. Most I paid was 140 euros for pic related, but it's an A4.
Far as artists go, considering this is by Carlos Ezquerra, co-creator of Judge Dredd, it was a bit of a no-brainer. I love the dude like I love life itself. But outside that, to me it's a matter of finding an artist with a style I dig, then seeing what they like to draw.
I'd love to have more money to get bigger stuff, but so far the biggest I have is a Simon Bisley sketch commish I got at a con that's close to A3. And that was a massive stroke of luck.

>950
>600

Jesus Christ how many times did you get off to it to get your value back?

Probably about once a day on average, give or take.

>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
First thing I'd consider is what they draw. If they're fucked up in the head, I wouldn't give the creep any money.

I've commissioned lots of stuff in the year-ish since I started. The most I've ever spent on one piece was $79. Typically I tend to commission colored pics (sometimes flats, sometimes shaded) in the $20-$40 range as I'm not made of money. You pay more for the more popular artists, unless they're undervaluing themselves but I'm not about to tell an artist to charge more when I'm about to pay them, lol. Sometimes artists can overvalue themselves but undervaluing is way more common.

Sometimes I give artists tips too, if I really like how the piece turned out.

>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
#1: do I like their art style?
#2: do I think their art style would go well with X character I'm commissioning?
#3: do I feel their prices are reasonable given the quality of their art and the number of followers they have?
If both questions are answered in the affirmative, then I commission them.

Usually I get my own OCs drawn but sometimes I'll commission art of non-OCs that will get the artist lots of reblogs when they post it. Pic related, something I commissioned from LiefeldianAbomination when Incredibles 2 was being talked about more because I knew it would do good notes for him and help him out. Not gonna lie, the number of notes a commission does feeds my ego. I'm not the only one.

Commissioning can get addictive. Once you start it can be hard to stop as long as you keep having the money to spend on it. It's really cool telling someone to draw something specific and then they draw it for you.

sometimes people draw weird stuff because it pays well, not cause it appeals to them.

PIc related is the only non-con commission I've gotten

I've commissioned something small from a friend, but now that I'm thinking about it, I haven't heard from her in a while.

awesome

>Would you ever commission a piece of art? Yes.
But I'd be as happy with a non-commissioned piece of art. It's more interesting when the artist was free to draw what he wanted, and you just happen to like the result.

>How big of a picture or how much would you be willing to spend?
Depends of a lot of factors. It is an investment or a purely personal want, what is the appeal of the piece and the artist, crayon/ink/watercolors, how much do my current finances allow, and so on...

>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
Do I like it - Y/N. Often coupled with enjoyment of previous works.

Biggest one I own is a two-page spread of an helicopter mountain rescue by Weinberg (Dan Cooper). That didn't cost me anything because he considered that I was a really polite 6 yo boy. He's a really cool guy.

How many Hersheys do you have, by now?

I have. I have an entire comic box of sketch covers varying from various artists I got commissioned. I have a books of sketches (and prints).

I follow this. I fully agree it is hard to stop once you have the income. one year at C2E2 I blew $3,000. On sketches alone.

Then last year I promised myself not to buy anything expensive. Then Dustin Nguyen had to show up with his original works and had a Cassandra Cain sketch he drew I thought he sold YEARS ago and had it for $300.

Then there's the actual art of the comic. That's even more insane then just simple sketches. Official art is literally double the price if it's a good or iconic shot of a big character.

I own six pages of original comic art (five pages of a certain Batgirl above, and the other one of a friend's who gave me his Indy comic art).

The thing is though once your collection builds. You're gonna get offers for what you have. There's a sketch cover Clay Mann did for me (Magneto and this was prior to him doing that Magneto mini).

So I paid $800 for the sketch. Since then I'd had offers for this particular sketch ranging from double to triple the price I paid, or offered various other sketch covers for this lone sketch.

I said no and the sketch cover hangs in my living room along with a Christopher Jones YJ Black Manta, and Dijana Granov Lady Shiva.

In physical... five, plus a shared piece with Anderson.
Lots more in digital, although most are gift art from generous-ass friends.

Who are the best artists/sites for commissions?

Depends. If you want good deals? Go to cons. You'll find a hoard of artists thirsting for commissions (since that's why they're there to make money).

For artists online? Sup Forumsdraw threads. You'll find no greater pool of talent online then there. Once you learn the artists' names look at their work. See their commission prices and what character you'd think will look great by them?

I want to commish a 12 pictures setof porn nature, but i am trying to have the money first and to be honest i have no idea of how much a good artist will charge so i guess i will go for something cheap.
Like Palcomix, does Palcomix still make commissions?

I do commissions on a base price of $100 usd .
some say its too much , but I see a lot o artists charging a lot more , so I will keep my price .
I just need to find more people who wants to pay for my art .

Nah, drawthreads are just as good.

Those look pretty heckin' fresh, Judge. How the heck do you get 'em? Do you honestly get them all done at cons? I've never been to a con where they did commissions.

Ezquerra takes commissions via FB. Super professional and ridiculously accessible for being, y'know, motherfucking Carlos Ezquerra. You can friend him and then ask him via messenger, easy as that.
Bisley was a huge stroke of luck. It was his first time in Argentina so I basically just broke the bank. And then I have a couple of ones made by a local artist that I met, yeah, at a con.
Most cons have an artist's alley of some sort, which is where you wanna go for commissions. Big name artists usually get their own stands, and you can look 'em up there too.
If not, you can usually go to an artist's website or Twitter/FB/whatever account, see if they're open for commissions, and drop them a line.

>For artists online? Sup Forumsdraw threads. You'll find no greater pool of talent online then there.
strongly disagree

>Then Dustin Nguyen had to show up with his original works and had a Cassandra Cain sketch he drew I thought he sold YEARS ago and had it for $300
That's not a commission though, that's just buying art.

I got my start in commissions scoping out artists in drawthreads, but I haven't gone in those threads looking for new artists to commission in a while. All the artists I've found lately were artists known by the artists I had already commissioned from, and I found their art through Tumblr and Discord servers.

Wait, are you talking about those two time stop comics dave did?

commissioning artists you find on Sup Forums is a bad idea in general. lots of unprofessional artists trying to make a quick buck. sounds like it worked out well enough for you but i'd say you were lucky.

I specifically found LiefeldianAbomination and JMD from the drawthreads, and I didn't commission them until after I had already been following them for a while. All other artists I commissioned were found outside Sup Forums but some of them do post here.

>found outside Sup Forums
you want to namedrop any?

Unfortunately, the artist I would have wanted to commission isn't available. :(

Although I'd rather hire a model to pose in cosplay, to be honest. Assembling the pieces for the costume, props, renting a space, and the costs for the film, it would probably be cheaper to hire an artist. Then again, for the detail I'd want in a commissioned piece, it might even out.

Commissioning is great.
As is buying comic pages.

I really should get to framing more of my stuff.

Same or Geers.

>non-con
oh dear, what did you do to that poor artist?

Yes

>artgerm
i want to commission him, how do i contact him for that? do i wait for a con?

no idea. i imagine he's extraordinarily expensive though.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate and assume he means that it's the only commission he's gotten that wasn't from an artist at a convention.

I commissioned a couple, a softcore Gen13 one and a non-core one of the Biskit Twins from LPS. I basically decided based on the quality of the artist and also how expensive they were. Pretty sure I didn't pay over 100 for either which would probably be my bar.

Is correct.

Not sure who it is, too lazy to check, but I'm really digging the current Blue Beetle artist. I'd pay top dollar for them to draw me some karate bug men. Specifically Kuuga and Agito.

got to met ale garza
asked him for 'real' power girl ($100)
took almost an hour (large drawing)
people were all around him when finally done
some were asking if he was going to sell it/or how much.
he took several pics of it and then placed in a sleeve and gave it to me.
it was awesome.

:O pls post a pic of it

>softcore Gen13

Nice! Who is in it?

currently in port allen working.
drawing is at home.

very similar to this (i guess i'm not the only one asking for power girl by ale garza)

dang that is nice. hefty!

Roxy and Sarah, it's based on the scene in the comics where we find out Sarah's lez: hentai-foundry.com/pictures/user/Oo_Sebastian_oO/320901/Gen-13--Sarah-and-Roxy

I've always wanted to commission a picture of my character from Xenoblade Chronicles X, but all the artists I follow are never open for commission.

I have, for an OC I ERP as

Grell is one of my favourite artists ever, so when I heard he was visiting a nearby con (after already cancelling an earlier one), I totally had to get a commission.

Whoops, here's the actual piece I got.

I’ve always wanted two pieces done. I would love to commission a Daredevil piece where he is diving off of a gothic building showing his acrobatic skills by perhaps Ross or Ribic. I would also like a piece that shows Hawkman flying over a city. The price would be a cityscape with a hawkman small against the city.

I commission a lot of art for rare ships and obscure characters - I'm responsible for 90% of the Nekron/Larn art out there, for example. Most I have paid has been 200ish for a pillowcase design, but that was double-sided.
Nowadays though I mostly collect art of my own characters

"Whoops"

I've been thinking about it, but most artists I follow draw what I like anyways, so I was just thinking about shilling to their Patreons.

Very jealous, Grell is a legend and one of my favorites too. Also what did he think of your costume Twink Lad?

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?
If I had the money to spend.
>How big of a picture or how much would you be willing to spend?
As much as I could. Cheesecake of old obscure waifus mosty.
>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
Can I fap to it? If it's good enough for a fap then it's good enough for commisions of fap fodder.

i love you, judge user.

user for that much you need to be fapping at least twice a day to it. Or alternatively using it to get a real chick to role play it out.

odraws is insane, but i commissioned a couple of things from them because their art can be good. never more than 50 bucks or so. i have a few other artists i've been eyeing, too. i would only commission something from an artist i really like.

Only at cons.

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?

I have. The cons I go to have talented but unknown artists. I have yet to have a commission done by someone that's considered A-list.

I HAVE commissioned some art. It's generally gone pretty well although I've had some semi-regretful results and this one guy hasn't gotten back to me in like two months. He's cheap so I suspect he does this deliberately to draw people in.

Around $60 is my limit unless I had a very strong desire to see a particular idea done by a particular artist and I had to pay more to see it happen. For this reason I'm usually confined to single-figure pictures since most artists charge charge a significant fraction of their base price to add figures.

>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
By looking at their existing work and posted pricing information (I wouldn't mind getting a pic from 14-bis but he charges more than I like his work). If there are things they won't draw (this is usually for porn) this is obviously important.

Not Wingbat but would pay for X-23 lewds

>third row fourth column
where the hell is her asshole?

Whats the name of those comics user?

He thought it was pretty hilarious

here - rule34.paheal.net/post/view/1888233#search=legoman x-23

Name?

I've commissioned a picture for about 40 bucks. I'd be willing to pay 60.

Probably would feel too nervous to spend 100s, out of worry that I don't like it enough.

h-have you made those comics available online somewhere?

what was the picture of?

Not even that guy but:

No, it's something I commissioned.

>tfw artist
>tfw all of this guys spending so much money on commissions
I don’t want to draw fetishes and all of that but pls gib money

post your work

fuck that
i'll draw it myself

Most of what I commission is NSFW, but this was the most expensive of things I payed out for. Console tan girls of Sega Genesis and Game Gear of my designs.

Dude, draw whatever the fuck you want. Just be able to do it consistently, and good enough that you can make money on Patreon from it. Now get the fuck out there and do it! I believe in you, you mad bastard!

Go to a craft shop or Amazon. They have portfolio books you can put prints/sketches/pages in.

This was a commission I did for a friend's oc.

Xenoverse 2 OCs fighting each other.

...

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?

It's conceivable. One idea I've been bouncing in my head has been finding doujin artists that speak English and commissioning doujins based on characters I like that are so obscure they don't get any normally.

>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?

...Based on if I like them or not? What kind of a question is that?

She's not a Leech because she is getting her money from the guy she is cheating on you with.

Why is Dawny such a chestlet here?

I am tempted to commision anibaru the cat to not do any commissions so he can work on cats delicacy

If i had the money i would commission a ton of Rogue art from different artists, maybe also some webcomics of her just being cute and pure, doing innocent every day stuff.

I commission porn of Tyr'ahnee on regular basis from many artists.
Currently saving up for a multi-page comic

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?
Ive already about 500 dollars worth of art at conventions in my sketchbook
>How big of a picture
Ive considered commissioning some oil paintings recently
>or how much would you be willing to spend?
traditional - 200+
Digital - 150 or less
>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
Depends on the artists medium, how their figures are, and how chill they are.

15 bucks a sketch, 25 bucks colored

I'm cheap when it comes to my furry porn

Question. Has anyone here commissioned BigDeadAlive? If so, how long did it take for your commission to be completed?

>Would you ever commission a piece of art?
I never commissioned but I was tempted several times. The thing keeps me back is I'm extremely picky so the art must be perfect. This alone leaves me with the most expensive artists and since I want perfect the picture must have a lot of detail which ramps the price up exponentially. I don't earn that much, no matter how I would like, I just can't justify spending that much on pretty pictures. Not to mention I'm kinda afraid I get hooked on.
>How big of a picture or how much would you be willing to spend?
Big. I don't know the prices nowadays, but I guess several hundred dollars (and go way above in a heartbeat for certain artists).
>How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?
The art has to click with me. Easiest way is to see a lot of pictures from the artist which is easy if you visit certain websites. Similar theme helps as well, for example if the person draws super heroines or princesses it is easy to expect what will I get. I have at least 5 artists in my mind who could draw a big pile of shit and I would like it.

Would you ever commission a piece of art?

I commissioned a lot past year. Probably $300 worth.

How big of a picture or how much would you be willing to spend?

It really depends on my mood and how much I like the art. If it's really good then I'll probably splurge. Though there are some cases were I end up regretting it.

Like "I spend $70 on this?" Post commission regret is real.
How would you even decide if you want a particular artist's work?

If the art speaks to me. It has to catch my eye. Or if the artist is cool. I normally choose the lowest option first; and if that turns out well then I might increase it.

So far I've only found 1 artist that I like. On Sup Forums /aco/ threads surprisingly. All the others were either scammers, hacks, and 1 artist fucking ghosted me. Fuck that guy

>1 artist fucking ghosted me
What was the name of the Artist?

Unlikely.

Lobo by Jellykoe

I usually try to get something small to support an artist I like and whatnot
