God is expanding himself through us, freely -- that's why He made humans in the first place. Eventually once we quality we will literally walk among God and be like Him, part of the righteous God family.
God has choice, and so when He made humans He gave us choice as well (a state of perfect neutrality from our inception) -- but in the garden, against the Law God gave us during our developmental stage, we as a race rejected God and chose the path of sin instead, and sin has consequences.
In this way we needed to have free will and experience this human journey in order to freely choose to develop into God-like beings, something programmed robotic servants could not be. God is not a programmed being, so in expanding Himself through humans He couldn't make us programmed beings either -- we possess free will.
The redemption process that God has afforded us, is almost like a distillation process by which those who love God can freely choose to accept Christ's ways and be saved -- we have to freely choose align ourselves with God through accepting the redemption of Jesus.
