Our spending on military in relation to GDP is comparable to that of other nations. It just so happens e have a huge economy to bolster it. Consider the fact that the original intent of the federal govt was to provide national defense and some infrastructure. It was not made with the intent of having a welfare state. If trump lowers the spending on entitlements which we spend more on than the military it could very well fix the economy as people will start contributing to society again.
Having a conventional military is the only way to win a conflict. Isis and china couldn't give two shits less how many nukes we have because they know we will likely never use them again due to the amount of civilian casualties which it would cause. The muh nukes argument fell apart after the Cold War because major military conflicts have occurred since then without the involvement of nuclear war.
