If the electrocal college didn't exist and it were based on popular vote (which is by FAR the most fair way) then Hillary would have won in a land slide... just take a look at this map (with states size proportionate to population) BTFO
I never got the point of the electoral college. Why is it unfair that the states with more people in them have more power in deciding who the president is?
Dylan Morgan
Good thing we live in a constitutional republic and not a democracy. Also, good thing we live in the United States of America and not the United People of America.

Remove California and Newyork and you've got one hell of a country

So that the candidates spend time campaigning in those states too rather than focus their campaigns on massive cities like LA, NYC and Chicago in an effort to win the popular vote

[In a pure democracy], [a] common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole; a communication and concert results from the form of government itself; and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual. Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths
Robert Cruz
also because big states already get a shit ton of influence in the house of representatives

AND in the electoral college.
Cooper Sanders
Because the U.S. is a massive country and each state is practically it's own country both geographically and by population. It's the United States after all so it is fair to have a President win based on getting a majority of the states which is exactly what Trump did. The EC is like a compromise between having state majority decide the election and having the popular vote decide the election. Maybe it isn't the best system but it isn't completely stupid.
Jayden Howard
That's an ancom you mongoloid

>PA and IL each have 20 electoral votes >different sizes on the map >OH has 18 and is bigger than PA >GA with 16 is the same size as AL with 9 >NJ with 14 smaller then MT with 3

The 1790 Naturalization Act states that only "free white persons of good character are citizens." And originally only white heads of households who owned land or a building were allowed to vote.

...then people would have voted differently because the system would have been totally fucking different. The many millions of Trump supporters/Republicans in Democrat run shitholes like California and New York would have come out in droves. Likewise you'd see higher Dem turnout in Texas.
The winner of the popular vote in a system where the popular vote is irrelevant can't tell us who would win the popular vote if the system was changed to one where the popular vote was all that mattered.
Luis Jenkins
and with the electoral college you can basically erase all the states except Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, and apparently Michigan and Wisconsin this time around but basically only the swing states matter.
The west coast always blue, the northeast always blue, the southeast almost always red, the middle strip down the center of the country, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah always red, Alaska always red, Hawaii always blue.
and it comes out fairly balanced in electoral college count. Only a handful of contested states matter.
Joshua Martin
OP's a liberal cuck. Facts don't matter to him.

Property rights matter, too. You can't have an election decided by just heavily populated centers full of apartment dwellers. People that own the land have money, and therefore, more say in what happens. You can't have a country ruled only by a majority of poor people; that's just mob rule. Sorry that you don't like the system. Either move to a state will count more, earn more money, or fucking leave. The rules that were in place 200+ years before you were born are not going to be changed.
Thomas Baker

It would only be fair if each state had the same economic factors and contributions.
For example Cali has very few primary resources (ore, corn wood, water electricity etc) produced for it's population size as their environment prevents this. Giving them the say on the president for every election will focus the interests of their Californians, potentially misrepresenting the rest of the US as issues that affect say the corn belt will take second place to issues that effect Californians more than others.Same with the other urban centers. You might argue that this isn't a bad thing but without the representation of rural areas the cost to live in cities increases as all items start to cost more and so the economy falters. And yes Cali produces a lot of agricultural products but most are export items and not food staples.
Hudson Brooks
You realize pic related is ludicrously fake. Right?

>The west coast always blue, the northeast always blue, the southeast almost always red, the middle strip down the center of the country, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah always red, Alaska always red, Hawaii always blue.
You cannot be this fucking ignorant of US history to actually believe this. I live in Indiana, which is a blood red state and guess who we voted for in 2008? Guess what party California was voting for in the 80s? Go back to doing your fucking homework.
Connor Hernandez
>Forgetting Tennessee.
Well fuck you too.
Henry Sullivan
because >4 states with big cities would have the say of 46 other states >polititians would not care for other states >states in the states are not provincies in a regular country.
but most importantly, and one that I have never yet seen being spoken is that people tend to have the same problems regarding their environment. what I mean by this is that urbanites will have a tendency to think and vote more for one party that is adjusted more to them while farmers and other people (living in areas with less population density) will also tend to have the same problems regarding their own environment, hence voting for those that are more adjusted to them
now you could say, but if the cities have more people then we should follow them because we would be solving the problems of the majority. however, fly-over states can be as important as states with big cities due to raw resources and specialized production that help diversify the economy and actually create something tangible. Also, for problem solving within cities there is the mayor and the state laws.
With this said, and with what others have said, it makes perfect sense the electoral vote and to keep it.
The rules have been set for centuries, so liberals can go back the fuck home and cry in their beds.
Oliver Long
That's a lie. Clinton won the highest vote share (not majority, nobody did). I'm not saying she should be president (she REALLY shouldn't be president), but those numbers are completely made up.
