The One, by Rich Veitch, has been called everything from a "Watchmen before Watchmen story" to "one of the best 100 comics ever made" by Alan Moore himself.
But it would be just as accurately described as "really fucking weird". To the point that it almost defies description. It is easily one of the most "artsy" comics ever published by Marvel, to a point that probably exceeds even the ambitions of anything published by DC under their Vertigo imprint.
The only thing you really need to know about it though is that it's set during the Cold War and is about the nuclear arms race, postmodern philosophy, and Jungian psychology, and inparticular about how those last 2 things apply to the 1st.
It's currently being reprinted 1-issue-at-a-time by IDW. And issue #2 just came out today.
If you want to experience a trip like virtually no other that the comics medium can provide (plus some absolute 10/10 covers throughout the entire mini), then strap yourselves in, because we're storytiming the 2nd issue right now.
I've also storytimed the 1st issue in the link below incase you want to catch up.
It seems the recoloring doesn't do the linework justice

Can anyone post some comparisons with the old colors?

Sweet.

This is an absolutely surreal image. And at the same time it's authentic enough to almost seem real.

I ended up buying a TPB of the original black and white release because I liked the first issue so much. The rest of this story is just as weird as these first issues. The colorings ok but the original line work doesn’t quite shine through. Overall, great purchase.
I think it adds to it. It looks completely out there, and is the reason I decided to read it in the issue 1 thread from a couple weeks back. That, and the preamble op made. >The One, by Rich Veitch, has been called everything from a "Watchmen before Watchmen story" to "one of the best 100 comics ever made" by Alan Moore himself.

However, comparing this issue's cover with the original (), the original looks much better.
>Nuclear Power Plant >"Reactor" is clearly a natural gas tank.
You know, after the news used footage of burning natural gas terminals when covering Fukushima, you'd think I wouldn't get triggered by this horseshit, but here we are.
Jayden Sanchez
huh
well that is fucking weird

Oy yey those incompetent Slavic untermensch, the eternal Anglo has spoken
Elijah Allen
Yeah, the weird digital logo thing is part that most improved with the re-coloring.
Dominic Brown
Also agreed on the original cover looking better.

Is that a Office or reality-show-esque aside interview? Did they even do that back then?

This is spinal tap popularized the mockunentary in 84, this came out about a year later.
