It wasn't. What you're looking at is essentially a government willing to fund long shots. For instance, the entire rocket program that later became so important if it landed on the desks of any allied power would have been told to fuck off. Why? Because for every rocket they built, they could arguably have built a new fighter plane.

If the cold war was a war the side that spent huge amounts of resources on impractical projects would have lost.
I wasn't discussing whether or not it was a logical strategic move during a war. Obviously it wasn't since they lost. However, many of their technologies would be used decades later in American craft like the stealth bomber, which was based off of the flying wing design. They were decades ahead of their time, even if they they could have have been working on more practical things to help the war effort.
To be honest, investing in superior hardware was the right thing to do, since they were at a massive manpower disadvantage.

Even then, the United States had the Manhattan Project, Russian armor tended to be all around better, the Brits managed to develop radar technology which easily changed the course of the war.
Hitler continuously funded impractical wastes of time like flying wings (stealth bombers can't be built without modern plastics and can't fly without microcomputers, in 1945 the only advantage was tailless horizontal stability) and rocketry (without modern guidance systems and better explosives, rockets are pretty useless for anything other than tactical artillery such as the nebelwerfer and katusyha) while hampering development of much more practical technologies such as nuclear weaponry and assault rifles because of nonsensical personal prejudices (muh Jewish physics and muh intermediate cartridges)
You guys are assuming that new technology is perfect as soon as you start designing it. The simple fact is that the Third Reich took the first steps towards technologies that we still currently use today. If we were to just say, "Developing that technology right now is pointless. Let's just keep producing the technology we already have," we would still be cave men.
No, it really wasn't. Wars are won on logistics. The major problem that Germany had by war's end was even if they were to have hit a major gold mine or improvement they were unable to capitalize on it.
Let's say I'm Goering and I want to produce experimental jet fighters in large numbers. Well, now I have to retool factories to produce them. Then I have to make sure that pilots are effectively being trained for the new equipment. Then I have to go through the logistics of getting them where they're needed, replacing tools and parts in the field, etc.
The reason these technologies seem so advanced is simply because the Nazis failed and the Allies/Soviets stole everything useful they had developed. You're left with the few stories of success they had.
If the situation had been reversed with the Nazis stealing Manhattan project plans, or Russian armor technology it would look like the Allies were super advanced.

They could also have built around two of the surface to air version of the V-2 which given their shortage of trained pilots in the later stages of the war would have been an actual wonder weapon when it came to defending against allied bombing.
there's no point in being an "advanced society" when you're actively engaged in a war that needs practical technology instead of pipedreams that everyone except Hitler and his cronies could see would go nowhere. Rocketry and flying wings needed decades of investment from the peacetime US government to bear any sort of results while Hitler's obsession with Jewish physics corrupting his scientists held the German nuclear program back far enough that the 1942 raid on their heavy water plant in Norway pretty much stopped any chance of Germany developing the bomb because they had no other infrastructure in place despite having a significant head start over America at the start of the war

I didn't say they're advanced. I said they're superior. As in pound for pound, they have higher combat effectiveness. From the ubiquitous 88, to thicker armor, to the longer effective range of assault rifles.

No, they really didn't have higher combat effectiveness by war's end. Their command structure made combined arms operations difficult, their squad based tactics were founded around light machine gun support, their tanks were monstrously more important than the tanks they were fighting, assault rifles had a lower effective range than the carbines they replaced, and even than their effectiveness was hit or miss compared to submachine guns at the time due to urban warfare applications.

In a defensive war for survival. With pretty much all of the long term survivors being hardened veterans. By 1944, the trade off for a single man, tank, aircraft, etc was laughably bad. I.e., a tiger tank being downed by 5 sherman tank crews was still an extremely good trade as the tiger tank can't be replaced, the replacement crew couldn't be trained effectively, and they were killed with cheap effective technology and rookies.
