To be honest though, when you look at the diaries and actions of the German General Staff before the outbreak it seems more that it was a continuation of Germany's aggression on the continent.

WWI was just another instance of using war as a diplomatic tool but the alliance system dragged the other powers in and turned it into a European civil war.
