those things were far more integral to the "fandom" in the 2000s when the communities were more tight-knit, now most furries are much more casual and dont do that shit.

Of course, with the way some people feel about dogs or cats, the idea of a creature that combines the most desirabe qualities of human and animal seems obvious.

I think the separation between animal themed humanoids and outright animal people, while not inherently appearing to be a major gap, is still pretty decent. There's a hypothetical line between the mental factors that cause someone to, say, be attracted to anthropomorphic depictions of Pokemon from the guys who get boners from older Disney movies.
It's also funny that most of the domestic nip 'furry' porn usually features anthro fox-like critters instead of dog or cat people, with the former usually just being used for motifs for normal humans.
