I tried to tell my mom and sister that the study done that claims women make 78 or so cents to the dollar a man makes didn't account for different occupation, hours worked, and time taken off, and that women in the same occupation as men make the same amount. They were furious and called me a woman hating chauvinist pig.
Is there any proof that proves with absolute certainty that the wage gap does/doesn't exist?

The wage gap is real but only real because women do not generally go into the same diverse job sector men will. A dude can go work for an oil company living on a rig making +100k while a woman would rather sit behind a desk.

It is an earning gap not a wage gap. According to the department of labor and statistics "men EARN 19% more than women annually in full time jobs." This is cause by a major difference in the jobs that men and women choose to pursue. For example, women dominate the child care and nursing industries making up over 90% of their workforce, meanwhile men make up 89% of all engineers and nearly 100% of high paying manual labor jobs such as underwater welding. The jobs that are sought after by women tend to be lower paying than those pursued by men. To make a simple and quick argument, ask people: If women are payed 20% less than men, why would and employer (in an economy driven by profit) ever hire men if women preform the same job for less money. In fact, Milton Friedmen, a Nobel Prize winning economist stated "If women are indeed payed less for the same job than they will never have to look for work, in fact, work will work for them."
I actually said that. I asked them why wouldn't companies only hire women then if they could pay them less? The response from my mom and sister was I hate women for thinking that.

The Equal Pay Act. It's illegal to pay women or anybody differently for the same work, and anybody caught doing it can be taken to court.
