I tried to tell my mom and sister that the study done that claims women make 78 or so cents to the dollar a man makes didn't account for different occupation, hours worked, and time taken off, and that women in the same occupation as men make the same amount. They were furious and called me a woman hating chauvinist pig.

It is an earning gap not a wage gap. According to the department of labor and statistics "men EARN 19% more than women annually in full time jobs." This is cause by a major difference in the jobs that men and women choose to pursue. The Equal Pay Act. It's illegal to pay women or anybody differently for the same work, and anybody caught doing it can be taken to court.

I would also like to point out that in no civilization in the history of man kind has ever had a women, race, age, etc. equal in payment. There is always going to be imperfections because not everyone makes the same choices in life.
For example, some of the choices women make is taking fields such as psychology and nursing where those incomes are not as high as engineering or mathematics. This is where the "women are bad at math" stereotype comes from. Women like to say the reason they don't do those fields is because of that stereotype and that they believe they would get declined by the employers of those companies. I don't know if that is true or not. It sounds a little ridiculous for me to believe that. It would be like saying a men get declined in fields of writing because of the stereotype of men suck at language and vocabulary.
Lastly, if you do take a woman and man to do the same job, same experience, same number of years working, etc. then they will make the same.

there is an income gap due to the different jobs women and men do. but if they perform the same job they are paid mostly the same. the only case where women are paid less for the same job is in very high positions in large corporations. a very small percentage of the population but a very visible one.

I know one friend who was hiring new grad engineers paid the woman less than he did the man. But in general I think men are more likely to ask for a raise and also maybe mat leave factors into the numbers.

Every developed country has laws preventing employers from paying people unequal pay for equal work based on discrimination.
Typically known as Equal Pay Act and such.
Equal work is extremely important to understand though.
Simply being in the same job title, doesnt necessarily mean you are doing equal work as the other person, or deserve equal pay.
If there is a woman who has evidence that she is being discriminated against based on her wages, recommend that she charges her employer with the best legal representation possible. If Sally has a case that she is getting paid less than Joe for identical work, she is in for a HUGE settlement from her employer. Even if her case isnt perfect, if it is good enough to give her employer the slightest bit of worry, she will still end up with a sizable settlement.
Also the capitalism argument works wonderfully. What money-wise company owner would pay men over 1.25x as much as a woman who is capable of providing the exact same productivity. If employers could actually pay women less for the same productivity, they would only hire women.

The wage gap isn't just a myth, it's a hurtful, spiteful and shitty myth that undervalues men and attempts to shame them for getting what they deserve in exchange for what they contribute to society. Men work the vast majority of dangerous, intense jobs that most women don't want to do and frankly couldn't do even if they wanted to....yet feminists believe women should (as a whole) make the same as men? A secretary is not on the level of a construction worker and a daycare worker is not on the level of a professional electric sewage boiler welder and it's extremely pathetic to see people pretend this is the case.
IF a few fringe idiots continued to perpetuate this myth it would be a mild irritation but politicians are pushing the idea too. If women really want to start earning as much as a gender as men do, they can start working the less-glamorous jobs that widen the gap. A few weeks in a coal mine or undersea panda-slaughtering facility ought to change their minds about wanting to get paid more for cutting hair or teaching yoga.
